Lightning, reported by broadcast media.


            Lightning struck the St Augustine regional Airport runway
            yesterday which caused damage to a 5 foot by 6 foot area
            of the runway. That section of the runway was closed due
            to needed repairs. The cost of damage was estimated at
            500 dollars.

The topic today: thunderstorm safety.

Thunderstorms can be a mariners worse nightmare. They can develop
quickly and create dangerous wind and wave conditions. Thunderstorms
can bring shifting and gusty winds, lightning, waterspouts, and
torrential downpours which can turn a days pleasure into a nightmare
of distress. Boaters should use extra caution when thunderstorm
conditions exist and have a plan of escape. Mariners are especially
vulnerable as at times they may be unable to reach port quickly.
Ultimately, boating safety begins ashore with planning and training.
Keep in mind that thunderstorms are usually brief so waiting it out
