Weather and Climate Science Blogger

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Weather Underground is looking for a passionate Weather and Climate Science blogger! This position will function as a full-time scientist, who has excellent written communication skills, who will be responsible for writing a daily weather blog. During slow weather periods, blogging on climate change topics and new weather research will be expected. The position requires extensive outreach and interview efforts. Location will likely be in Atlanta, SF or NY.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Write weather/climate change blog posts geared towards an audience with a high school science education.
  • Perform media interviews and outreach (TV, print, radio, web, speaking engagements)
  • Stay current with the latest weather and climate science research by reading journal articles and attending conferences
  • Update and improve the hurricane and climate change pages on the wunderground.com website
  • Help out with social media (Twitter and Facebook) during breaking weather events

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Ability to write entertaining science education material for a high-school educated audience
  • Strong background in hurricane science
  • Strong familiarity with climate science
  • Fluency with social media
  • Ability to perform engaging voice and on-camera interviews
  • Web design and Search Engine Optimization skills
  • Experience with Photoshop and graphic design tools

EXPERIENCE:

  • B.S., M.S. or Ph.D. in Atmospheric science
  • 10+ years related work experience

Software Developer

GENERAL SUMMARY:

We are looking for a passionate Software Developer to work in our fun and fast-paced environment. You will create and modify software systems – and though you will primarily be concerned with meteorological products, development may be geared toward (but not limited to) other areas such as general infrastructure, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and support of sales / marketing functions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Software Development (80% of time)
    • Design, write, modify, debug, and test new or legacy software systems in an agile team environment
    • Use source debuggers, profilers, runtime analysis tools, and source code control systems
    • Create and maintain documentation
    • Perform research related to languages, data structures, algorithms, file systems, libraries, tools, datasets
    • Work with team members in software development and debugging activities
  2. Software Maintenance (10% of time)
    • Recognize and troubleshoot problems with server hardware and software
    • Upgrade, build, and install 3rd party software
    • Use monitoring tools / dashboards to determine system status
    • Participate in on-call rotation
  3. Customer Support (10% of time)
    • Use bug reporting / trouble ticket software to address issues brought up by clients and users
    • Work with dedicated support staff to gather further information and identify root causes of issues

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Skills, knowledge and abilities
    • Linux development toolchain (gcc/g++, make, gdb, gprof, valgrind, SVN, GIT, etc)
    • Linux system administration, bash / sh
    • C, C++, C#, PHP, Python, Javascript, other languages as needed
    • Object Oriented design, template meta programming, algorithms and data structures
    • Sockets, multithreading, graphics and image generation, regular expressions
    • Strong math skills
    • Strong communications skills and ability to work in an Agile team environment
  2. Experience

Come help save lives and join our cause! We’re looking for a passionate Product Manager to join us in our San Francisco office. The Product Manager gets things done and will be responsible for creating new and engaging customer experiences for our community of weather enthusiasts. He/She will collaborate with developers, UX designers, and marketing teams during the design and development process to bring products to life. The Product Manager is expected to innovate on the customer’s behalf, understand core product management principles, and be agile.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Own the product, Wow our customers
    • Identify customers and create end to end customer experiences
    • Create a product vision and paths to get there
    • Answer the What and Why of the user stories and product investments; back up claims with quantitative and qualitative data as available
    • Own and groom the product backlog
    • Be accountable for the performance of the product with analytics
    • Proactively research and understand how our audience interacts with our products and make use of this knowledge in the development of best possible user experiences
  2. Enable the Development Team
    • Run ahead of development to create and validate user stories and acceptance criteria

The Product Manager is expected to innovate on the customer’s behalf, understand core product management principles, and be agile.

Software Engineer, Android

GENERAL SUMMARY:

We are looking for two (2) passionate Android Software Engineers to work in our fun and fast-paced environment. You will be responsible for building the next generation of Weather Underground mobile apps to bring accurate and real-time weather for all. You should already live and breathe Android. You know the latest design guidelines, have worked on a production-level app or two, and know how to implement custom interfaces.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Software Development (80% of time)
    • Design, develop, and test mobile apps in an Agile Scrum environment
    • Debug, profile, and optimize code by you or others.
    • Use version control systems to work together with other developers.
    • Create and maintain user-facing apps, as well as API changes, SDK implementation, and documentation
    • Participate and contribute to a successful agile effort with Product Manager, Scrum Master, and UX/UI designers
  2. Software Maintenance (10%)
    • Recognize and troubleshoot problems with server hardware and software
    • Upgrade, build and install 3rd party software
    • Use monitoring tools / dashboards to determine system status

  3. Customer support (10%)

QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Experience with Java programming and building Android apps for phone and tablets
    • At least one app you’ve substantially contributed to in the Play Store
    • Knowledge of multi-threading, memory management, caching for mobile devices
    • Familiarity with XML, JSON, and REST-based APIs
    • 2+ years of Android experience
    • Strong communication skills and the ability to successfully work in an Agile/Scrum team environment
    • 3D graphics programming experience preferred
    • Preferred education level: Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science or Engineering
