Friday 26th--

A nice day to mow my lawn and pick up any loose brush and branches for burning in my outside woodstove tonight. All lawn furniture put away, except for 2 chairs that I will put away Saturday. I will enjoy a day off Saturday, the calm before the storm...

Have a Great and SAFE weekend all!!!

Good Morning {{Bangor}}!

Was thinking about you and Irene this morning. Enjoy your day outside I know how much you would rather be there then stuck inside. Will be watching from afar.

Be safe my friend.

Glad to see you peep in for a sec so that we know you're OK. I figured you may have had power/internet issues.

Looking to read your full report, when you get back online.

Hello RAYS and P-BUG! What a great surprise to see you stop by:-)

Irene was a non-event up here. I got a steady light rain when I woke up at 7AM. A few heavy bands on the outer edge with distant thunder between 9AM-2PM. Got a few breaks in the rain this afternoon with nothing but T.S. winds 30 to 50MPH. Hopefully good photos that I will post tomorrow. I went out walking on the golf course LOL. The sun broke through at 4PM! I'm getting the back side of the rains now at 7:30PM. I plan to go downtown and see if I can get photos of the 11PM High Tide possible flooding...all is well...UPDATE: No flooding downtown at high tide

Thanks for stopping by :-)

Ah, just what I was waiting for - not only an update, but a report of a non-event. Good for Irene. ;)

I heard the same thing from a friend in CT - a little more wind than you, and plenty of water, but nothing that's going to need more than some gentle chain-sawing and branch-gathering. Good to hear. I'll look forward to the pics!

Last year my Maple trees put on a dazzling week long show, first turning a bright mustard yellow, then a soft gold before they dropped. This year was a letdown. They turn tan for a few days and then they drop. Maple leaf blight is to blame. I knew it was coming, as I observed the dark brown spots on the green leaves in mid summer. Better luck next year I hope!

Bangor ~ have a question for you.

My current wordpress post is titled "A Gunkholer at Heart". Turns out a whole lot of folks never have heard the term, including a photographer from Austin who's also a bit of a word nerd.

He went snooping, and came up with this in my comments section:

Like your first commenter, I was intrigued by the word gunkhole, which is new to me, so I did some delving. According to J.E. Lighter's Historical Dictionary of American Slang, gunkhole is attested as far back as 1908; the book was George S. Wasson's Home from Sea, and the citation is: "Only a two-cent little dead-and-alive gunk-hole of a place". Most dictionaries that I've looked at claim that gunk is a common-noun-ization of the capitalized trademark Gunk, but according to Lighter the first product in that line of liquid soaps and degreasing solvents wasn't patented until 1932, so there's a chronology problem.

Of course words can float around in spoken form for a long time before appearing in print. The 1914 book The Rudder notes that "Among the old timers in Maine a gunk, or a gunk-hole, may mean up a tidal creek. The fact that the usage was attributed to old-timers implies that the term was probably in use well before 1908.

I first learned the word as a kid, c.1952-3, from an old guy at a Minnesota lake. I have no idea if he was native to Minnesota.

In any event, I thought you might have something to add. Do you know the word? Hear people use it? Do you remember hearing it as a kid? I'm just curious as can be. I'm really convinced it's an old word that's just escaped the dictionaries!

Glad to hear your snow's gone. It's a little early to start building snowpack!

Thanks for the note re: gunkholing. The word's turned into a bit of a mystery, but someone else is going to have to figure it out. Maybe I'll run across more info in the future....

Great Information, thanks! Unfortunately, it's always too cloudy to see the sunset where I live. It's also cloudy when I drink my morning coffee.

Hello Bangor!

From our Home to Yours
Merry Christmas and a Healthy & Happy New Year 2012!

"And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow,
stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons.
It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags.
And he puzzled and puzzled, till his puzzler was sore.
Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before.
What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store.
What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more."

- Dr. Seuss

Gotcha garden in yet, Walker?

Our azaleas peaked last weekend. Prime azalea season is usually in mid April.

We've been hitting low to mid 80's for the past couple of weeks. Lows at night are around 60.

The Green Blizzard is in full swing and I'm in
full blown allergy mode right now. I feel like rot, too.

Oh, the joys of spring, early or not.

Currier and Ives

We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for potential.

~ Ellen Goodman

Wishing you and yours a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year, Walker!
