CNN producer note
mamarazzi of Miramar Beach, Florida, says she is still seeing oil along her beach and got so tired of it that she invited a team of divers and researchers to come check it out last week. The team works for Ecorigs.org, a group of scientists and forensic divers in the Gulf. mamarazzi interviewed the divers and an oceanographer about what they found out about sea life on the ocean floor – they’re not seeing much of it these days. She paid the group gas money and put them up at her home, but did not pay for their services. They came on their own accord.

As for how Forsyth's life has changed, here's what she had to say: 'I won't go into the water because I know the oil has been coming back very toxic. I won’t go in the water, I won't eat the seafood. We have a lot of dead sea life.'
- zdan, CNN iReport producer
iReport —
During scuba assessments on July 12th 2011, the Florida panhandle shallow seafloor sediment shows signs of widespread presence of dispersed oil.

A team of research divers scoured the Florida panhandle looking for signs of BP oil. What they did find was a desolate seafloor, with few signs of life. The sand should be tan or white and look like a desert floor with ripples and ridges of tan sand.
Marine life should be attracted to the disturbance of bottom sediments, with small fish darting into the cloud of silt and crabs scurrying away to bury themselves in hiding. Rays and starfish should be abundant. What they filmed was a scene of dark desolate bottom sediment where dark sediment ejected from the animal burrows sat in piles of contrasting colors caused by contamination from the BP oil spill.

The environmental consultant who has been researching the DWH disaster for the past year was alarmed by the lack of living things in the northwest Florida waters. Another was shocked by the absence of bait fish during the 6 dives. As the dives progressed from east to west, the sediment conditions deteriorated considerably.

The sediment samples have been sent to a certified lab for chemical analysis and results will be back within a month. That's when we will know definitely what is lurking off the shores of the Florida panhandle.

In the meantime, ask your local representatives why BP isn't doing this kind of research to assure that the children and animals along the Gulf of Mexico are safe.

I read somewhere that BP was aware of a problem with the pipeline before it burst -- will try to find the link to that article. Of course, it could have been speculation, but who knows with BP?????

Got to run - the spouse is waiting, sitting on fiberglass... I'm going to be working from my floating office today! : )

Beach
We came home today from a 4 day time out at the beach next to Ft. Morgan. We now have tan to black beach sand. No white. There was oil and tar balls everywhere. The people on the beach payed this no attention. We saw dozens of dead female Blue Crabs. They appeared to be in a spawning cycle. I am going to research this to see if it is normal.

The gov. property had heavy equipment and workers cleaning the Ft. Morgan area. There was no cleaning being done on the private property.

This is all sad to me and I will probably not be spending much time at the beach anymore.

Link No, this isn’t a post from last year. Oil from the Macondo Well site is fouling the Gulf anew – and BP is scrambling to contain both the crude and the PR nightmare that waits in the wings. Reliable sources tell us that BP has hired 40 boats from Venice to Grand Isle to lay boom around the Deepwater Horizon site – located just 50 miles off the Louisiana coast. The fleet rushed to the scene late last week and worked through the weekend to contain what was becoming a massive slick at the site of the Macondo wellhead, which was officially “killed” back in September 2010.
The truly frightening part of this development, as reported in a previous post (see below), is the oil may be coming from cracks and fissures in the seafloor caused by the work BP did during its failed attempts to cap the runaway Macondo Well – and that type of leakage can’t be stopped, ever.
Catch up on how this could possibly be happening – again – by reading or re-reading my July 25 post below. Stay tuned as we will be all over this story as it continues to develop.

Link Fresh oil is surfacing all over the northern quadrant of the Gulf of Mexico. Reports of slicks that meander for miles and huge expanses of oil sheen that look like phantom islands are becoming common, again. Fresh oil, only slightly weathered, is washing ashore in areas hit hardest by last year’s massive spill, like Breton Island, Ship Island, the Chandeleurs and northern Barataria Bay. BP has reactivated its Vessels of Opportunity (VoO) program to handle cleanup. It’s a sickeningly familiar scene that has fishermen, researchers and public officials searching for answers, as haunting memories of last year’s calamity come roaring back.
The fifty-thousand-dollar question, of course, is where is all the new oil coming from?

Link We are looking for clarity this morning as mainstream media outlets, including the Associated Press, are reporting that BP has admitted to “investigating a new sheen in the Gulf of Mexico.” That muffled admission is in line with what our independent sources told us, and what we reported here, yesterday: That BP has hired a fleet of boats to lay boom in the vicinity of the old Deepwater Horizon site. This morning’s AP report is brief and filled with the vagueness and “wiggle room” that we’ve have come to expect from BP’s crisis-management specialists:

Link A shroud of secrecy continues to hang over the Deepwater Horizon site, 50 miles off the coast of Louisiana in the northern quadrant of the Gulf of Mexico. The Helix Producer I, a massive oil production vessel, is back in the area where the Deepwater Horizon rig sank to the sea floor – roughly 170 miles northeast of where BP officially lists its location. Perhaps you recall that the Helix, with the capacity to process 45,000 barrels of oil a day, helped capture oil spewing from the runaway Macondo Well last summer. In response to our Aug. 17 report that oil is rising from the Macondo field, BP spokesman Daren Beaudo said this: “We inspected our operations and our assets and didn’t find anything.”
So why is there an enormous oil production vessel currently parked atop the Macondo field? What’s it doing if there’s no leak and no oil?

(((Foxxy))) ~

So great to hear from you again earlier today! I think we've all been quite busy with this and that for awhile now. Hope this finds you well despite all the continuing shenanigans that have continued to go on with BP, Deep Water Horizon, etc. If we're not suffering at the hands of man made debacles, then Mother Nature seems to weigh in with droughts, tornadoes, floods ... you name it. Hopefully, a miracle will soon come to pass and allow us a return to some semblence of normalcy again ... eh?

Anyhoo, hope you'll be around here on Monday when we can perhaps rekindle some of our fun WU times while celebrating our mutual friend's (Emmy) birthday. I don't know about you, but I sure could use something to smile or chuckle about as well.
