This is an example as to why you can't trust long term data collection. Rational thought would be to expect skewed temperature results as urbanization overtakes monitoring equipment. Unfortunately some interpret such data as a definitive trend without considering the urban development of locations.

Even Blizz himself spoke of the warming climate in one of his blog posts. I believe it was the Earth Day one. He just doesn't believe it's human induced. Don't want to get into this subject though so I'll no longer mention it. Just posting interesting data. Whether it's extreme heat, extreme cold, pleasant temperatures, thunderstorms, snow, doesn't matter...

Tarrytown is a cool unique looking town.

I appreciate you posting the data. It is really nice to see what is going on up and down the east coast and all around. I wasn't trying to get into a climate change discussion. I was just mentioning that I thought some of the extreme highs had to do with all the pavement in the area.

I wonder if pavement can increase the heatwave to higher numbers? if you have 90F air, can pavement increase that air as it moves along

Btw - when are you moving? You excited coming to tornado alley of PA? hahahaha

Yeah I realize you weren't trying to go into that discussion. I want to keep it off this blog and save it for other blogs if we want.

If you mean pavement in cities increasing the high temperatures and then spreading out to rural / country areas, I really don't know the extent of that. I do know that if you walk from pavement into an open field, the temperature will fall. I know you know this, but that's why they require the official standardized thermometer to be at least 100 ft from any pavement. I love the microclimate discussion...

I am excited actually! I'm moving to Marietta permanantly tomorrow / Saturday. I told my wife it's the tornado alley of PA and she's a little nervous about that lol. I told her it's like Iowa.

TT - Yeah I know what you meant. You're talking microclimates which are quite cool. Lived in one down in NJ and now I find myself in one up here up on a hill. Especially prevalent in winter these two micro climates I lived in could support snow storms of 8" which just down the road 3 miles or less they got a slushy inch. I think Blizz mentioned he was studying them last year. They are important and to me could pave the way to understanding quite a bit more about weather such as thunderstorms and how they can strengthen and wane so quickly.

Hoy - You must have had a clear view of the lighting from the storms in NJ and heading out on LI out to sea. I can't get such a view from up here unfortunately. Only saw a handful of distant lightning flashes yesterday from the train.

Meanwhile it's quite juicy out there today wouldn't be surprised to see more storms out of it. One thing of note is the Wunderground severe report map Blizz has posted in the blog. It shows tornadoes in two SE NY counties. SPC has no such reports. I checked several days worth of data. No tornado reports.

Yeah, I know what you're talking about as well. It's all good. The microclimate is quite interesting. Have a good one!

Good luck with your move. You are right on the water almost huh. and very very close to Cool Creek Golf course. I have played there a couple of times. Rt. 30 has some nice restaurants. The Accomac was a really nice place 9 years ago. I haven't been back since. and there is Alfred's Victorian in Middletown. Just a couple I have tried. East York looks like there are many chain restaurants.

Interestingly enough the Lower Susquehanna Valley seemed to miss the worst of the highest temperatures. Appears I-95 really got the brunt of the heat with highs in the upper 90s to over 100F!

We have been moving stuff in almost every weekend since May 1st so the move has gone nice and smooth without completely breaking us down. My regular job ended yesterday so I'm going out permanantly Saturday but the wife is staying back here and visiting on weekends until she finds a suitable job out that way, no idea how long that's gonna take.

Lots of restaurants in York. We usually either drive to York or Mount Joy for groceries / supplies and always York when going out to eat. About 20 minutes to York.

You can really smell the farms coming from the Mount Joy area under a north wind. Something we are certainly not used to around here! We find it kind of neat though being Megalopolis folk lol.

So in order it goes the river, the train tracks, Front St, then our street which is Market St and we're 3 buldings from "The Square" in the center of town. So we're 1 block from the tracks which run along the Susquehanna. We have this great view from our apartment across the river to this huge mansion which sits atop a 550 foot hill (700 ft elevation) and we have no idea what it is. We took a drive across and up those hills to find out what it was but it's like a mile long, twisty, private uphill drive and couldn't check it out. I went on Google Earth and zoomed to the top and they have an incredible 360 degree view from up there. I'm sure they can see Harrisburg - Blue Mountain - York and Lancaster no problem and maybe even Maryland. Looks like the White House or something.

TT - you aren't terribly far from Elizabethtown or Middletown (20 mins maybe). Sounds like a great view. As for smelling like a farm...get used to it. I hardly have the windows open because the smell of manure is very very strong. The other day it was really strong.

Blizz - I don't mind missing out on the 100's. 90's works for me. hahahahaha

Hey all, haven't been on in a few days. I spent most of the 2 day heatwave in bridgeport working so there was always sea breeze and it was not as hot. I wonder what the highest temp in CT was over those 2 days.

Anyways We lost power for over 3 hours thursday night from the big line of storms that came through.

When that first wave moved through the area, I thought did I luck out with just a bit of rain. Then the end of the glob circulated down to me from your area Blizz.
The storm woke me around 345am and I looked on my phone at the radar and watched that big glob. I also use my phone to get weather warnings. With the strong lightning I would have thought there would have been a warning, but there wasn't except flood advisory.

I got 1.25". I looked on Cocorahs and I was surprised there weren't more 1 and 2 inch rainfall amounts, unless some people haven't sent in their data.

1.15" of rain here overnight...

We're getting some sun this morning which is going to destabilize things quickly.

The 12z HRRR shows a line developing in the mid afternoon and coming through the LSV.

A few strong storms...possibly supercells....may develop out ahead of this line. Several models have mean EHIs over 1 this afternoon and moderate shear. You would think the SPC would have us under a 2% tornado threat but they don't.

I hope the models are wrong. My neighbor is getting married in her backyard this afternoon and I hope it goes off without storms. They do have a tent, but it would be nice to have all their guests to be able to run around and have fun

The new HRRR isn't showing an intensification of these storms until they get near or past Harrisburg now. It seems like there might just be a little too much moisture in the atmosphere today. Mid-Level lapse rates are too low at the moment in central PA to support strong updrafts. Regardless, these showers and thunderstorms will likely become widespread and be somewhat of a flash flood threat this evening even if they don't become severe.

TT: Congrats on your move. Not familiar with the area. Sounds like you'll really enjoy the change from city life. I went from city to suburbs just outside the city limits. My property is partially wooded and is bordered by a large tract of unimproved woodlands owned by Mt. Lebanon designated as a park. It's a perfect marriage between convenience and privacy. No manure smells though LOL.

A refreshing air mass has come into Western PA. Not so juicy. Have opened the windows and am expecting a comfortable couple of days in the 70s.

Wow, what an incredible evening. I was watching the radar all day. My neighbor is having a wedding and reception starting at 5pm. The wedding went off great. Nice breeze. No rain. The rain was circling around to our north. Finally, I got a msg saying tornado warning for the area. I looked at the radar, but it was just to my east. The rain finally circled around and dropped down on top of us, but it didn't last long. The clouds were very dark just to my east. I stopped back here because my phone died and I wanted to see what to expect next. They are all coming to me to see what is next. hahahaha.

It was so great. Like a magnet keeping the rain away for most of the day. Some rain now, but that is ok. They have a big tent for everyone to still have fun. They were worried when the tornado warning was issued, but technology is great these days. Having my phone with radar I could see where everything was and how it was moving. Also, getting the warnings sent to my phone and where the rotation was located helped as well.

I'll tell ya the sky got pretty scary looking around 8:05, black clouds swirling every which way, then it just absolutely unloaded at 8:10 and was at its heaviest from then till about 8:30. I honestly haven't looked around for any damage but I'd imagine there's some branches down etc. I heard a barn was blown onto a roadway here in Lancaster County.

Storms keep rebuilding and training here. Pouring outside as I speak.

There's an enormous amount of loud lightning with these storms.

pretty much has stopped. my lawn was a bit stressed from not much rain the past couple of weeks. I guess it will come back nicely this week as well as the weeds.

Amazing this area for tornados. This year has been especially bad. I wonder how many tornado warnings for this area so far? you would think we lived in the plains.

06/11/2011 0820 PM

Salunga, Lancaster County.

Thunderstorm wind damage, reported by 911 call center.

Barn blown onto roadway

No idea how much rain fell as there are no PWS stations close enough that measure precipitation. There's one in Mountville that hasn't reported since before yesterday's storms.

Hey MariettaMoon,(TT) congrats with your move, quite a weather indoctrination to becoming one of the LSV boys! Checked on the web site I found that gives "as the crow flies" distances between cities, and you are exactly 172 miles WSW of me here in Stamford CT. The name of the site is www.distancefromto.net/ It's fun to use, even gives a map with each check you do between places.
