The Federal Government is voting on a new bill HR 875 that would create a NEW government agency to watch over food, farms and edibles. The bill has been mostly written and sponsored by food giant Monsanto.
Many people feel the passing of this bill and creation of yet another government agency would impose too many restrictions on mom & pop/ small business food and agriculture. They fear all these regulations could force the little guys out of business.
The wording of the bill sounds reasonable if you google HR875. Of course when it comes to more government agencies I believe the road to purgatory is paved with good intentions. Please take time to research this bit of legislation and inform your congress person how you would like them to vote on this $$$ new agency.

SEEN ANY HUMMINGBIRDS YET? (blog discussion below)
So has anyone recieved their little hummingbirds from way down south yet? My honeysuckle vine and stachys have been blooming like nobodys business this year. Seems a titch early.
Usually when my "hummingbird" flowers are in full bloom I get the little guys buzzing around my head in the garden demanding that the feeders be put up.
Haven't seen any hummingbirds yet. I usually get the black-chinned hummers. They look like miniture over-caffinated penguins. Put the feeders up today just in case.
There may be some drama at the back feeder. A couple of mockingbirds are building a nest in the honeysuckle vine next to where I hang the feeder.
As for the latest tale of "As the dental bill grows", finally had the bad tooth removed and a post for an implant put in. Great sedation, really don't remember a bit of it. Now I have this funny little retainer with a tooth attached to it to wear until the post sets.
Boy do I look like Daisy May with the retainer out and a big toothless smile. Know what? Because I live in a trailer and am missing a front tooth I now have a license to be over 40 and wear a crop top tee-shirt, with micro shorts and flip flops. Yee-haw Ya'all!
LOL You do paint a wonderful picture!! The nearest we get to hummingbirds is the hummingbird moth. It is a really large moth that flies in the daytime rather than at night, and has a long proboscis that it uses to suck nectar out of the plants.
By the way... the hyacinths here are still not out, neither are the iris.... but the daffies are nearly over!! How weird!
Hope you have a great Weekend :))

Don't forget some daisy dukes (if it's warm enough) & you may as well make plans for a proper (kiddy) pool in the front yard.
All I get is hummer moths. I have no idea where the real ones go in the winter. I didn't see my orange crested winter residents stay this year. I think they just kept going south.

Good morning GG! I saw my first Hummer on St. Patty's day but only once since then. I put my feeder up next to the flowers he was interested in so hopefully I'll see him again soon and be able to get a decent pic. My Amaryllis' from my Mom are blooming again and new growth is coming out of everything. Well, I better get up soon and get some chores done so I can get out in the backyard but I wanted to come by and wish you a happy first day of spring! I hope you have a great day.

Any hummers landing here in March would be branded insane. Or republican. Robins have returned. Saw a hawk with a big stick flying into a pine tree....that was cool.
Hey you! Ouchies on the teefies :( My mom just had 3 posts put in and she can't chew on one side of her mouth. What a pain! Er, yeah. Anyway...
I see hummingbirds pretty much year-round but have noticed many more, and more variety, lately. Saw one sipping at the tangerine blossoms the other day that looked completely black! Is that normal, do you think, or is it some kind of mutant?

No hummingbirds yet, but I did see two turkey vultures today! That really should count for something. One of those would make dozens of hummers!m (Ok, they're not anywhere near as cute.)
Hummers at my work but not at home yet. Just put up our oriole feeder, thought I heard them the other morning. Those hummingbird moths are neat, but their children are very bad! Hornworms are what they are called.

Hi All, this has turned into two blogs since I read about the HR875 in Skyponys blog. Haven't seen any hummers yet. I think my goldfinches have migrated north. The finch socks are looking ignored. A wren has been coming around the garden and a tiny nest is being built in the Italian Cypress. Haven't seen who is building it.
Hi Sandi, The sphinx moths sure do look like hummingbirds. They come from those big green horn worms that are fond of defoliating tomato plants.
Hi Prosepina, yes, today is your namesake day!
Hi Jane, Robins are a great start for getting spring going.
Hey Skypony, I'm surprised Florida doesn't have year round hummers like California does.
Hi IC, Wow, your amarillis bloom early. Mine won't happen until May/June.
Baja, You know that really could be us in a few more years if we are blessed with the "happy" dementia at that age.
Hi Emmy, pretty spring fairy picture, thanks.
Hi Gams, well at least the butterflies and other beneficials probably use the humming bird feeders.
Rebel, LOL. I like how you think. Hope you get to see the hawks set up house.
Hi Sp, lucky you to have a year round variety of the little speedy jewels. You may have seen a black chinned hummer. They look dark from the back.
Hi Skyhawk, We should be getting more rain this week . Hooray! I'm betting on hummers by the 1st.
Hi Sig, Will let you know when they show up here. Tell you what, if dental implants are like having a real tooth it will all be worth the hassle and money. This retainer with the fake tooth is not fun at all. So you make sure the do a good job on those implants. All us toothless wonders are counting on you :)
Hi JD, Turkey vultures are only cute if you watch them waddle/run. Then they are a hoot! I think my goldfinches have headed up your way. Let me know. They forgot to bring the thistle socks I put out for them. Will have the hummers carry them up for those forgetful little birds.
Hey Calpoppy, you get orioles too? Those are so cool. Minus the water restriction thing, where you live sounds pretty nice.
Hi Penguin, Oregon is another one of those states that have lots of great outdoor things to do. I'm right with you on forgetting the camera. Now that we bought the little pocket camera thats waterproof/shock proof, I have forgotten it on every outing this month. Doh.

My camera is not that fancy. It's an earlier model sony that needs to be plugged into the wall before each use and has a disc that needs to be finalized before you can download anything into the computer.
Okay, so it's not my idea of that dream camera with all the fancy lenses that I probably won't know what to do with, but the price was right. (Free!! it was collecting dust at Dad's)
Oregon does have so much wonderful stuff to do. I just never seem to be at the right part of the state for what I want to be doing at that particular moment. LOL!!
since I now live in southern Washington, I am trying to learn all the wonderful things to do here now.

Wow, my weekend just flew by. The toothless spot doesn't hurt anymore which is nice. Weather was awesome and got to play in yard. Went to the Late Night at Dallas Museum. Wish more museums would do late night openings. The place was packed until midnight. Now off to do the long work week and then resume the regular schedule. Life is good and going to work makes me appreciate every second of free time.
Hi Mom, it seems we have elevated phone tag to a high art. Guess I'll catch up with you via blog and e-mail :)
Hi Penguin, most of the newer point and shoot digital cameras can do what those high dollar cameras with fancy lenses can do but without all the skill one needs to use the fancy cameras. The best part is the huge memory cards allow you to shoot hundreds of pictures. Sooner or later you get some really good ones in the bunch. They have also come waaaay down in price for all the features.
Hi Gams, What is it about pineapple and coconut that just mmmm smells like vacation?
Have a great week all :)

The deer peeper hasn't returned since I have covered all of my shrubbery with black netting. I think I have discouraged it...for now. It really kind of freaked me out!
It is snowing today, so the hummingbirds better stay far away!!!

It is Tuesday here.... (well, it is Tuesday there too, but you have more of it left!) Tomorrow is the first of April, and the first month of Early summer.... can't wait, and I have every finger and toe crossed to make sure we get a wonderful summer, need on after last year:)
Hope your week is going well.... did I read thsi night time activity is coming to an end?? Will you then join the hoards who work during daylight hours!!! LOL

I still haven't decided what to do about my teeth issues. Braces or Implants with Invisalign down the road. Both are very pricey options, so I've been trying to do lots of research before making up my mind. I did a google image search for trashy trailer gals and I don't think I could post of the pictures that came up on here. Baja's pic was a hoot though!
Have a great day!

Hummingbirds won't show up here until June. No flowers for them to visit until then! We just saw our first robin here yesterday.
I bring birds and flowers, scents and sunny days. Rejoice, Proserpina has come back to Mother Earth.

This gal's got ALOT of HEART!!! *raises coffee cup* Here's to NEVER having THIS MUCH heart!!! hahahahahahaha!!!! Have a great weekend!!
Happy Spring GG!
Happy First day of Spring to ya!
I have the right plants and keep a humming bird feeder fresh and have not had a hummingbird in my yard but once in 20 years.
I just do not think they stop in SE Florida in their migration. Wish they did.
But I keep trying... now I do get lots of butterflies!!!
happy Spring to you!!!

Spring 2009 Migration of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds
Let me know when you see some and I will get my feeders up.
The company I now work for makes dental implants - it is apparently good business for them.
Oh, and I would love to post the photos, but I left my camera at my friend's house!!
