Studio City Weather Blog

Can't sleep tonight and I suddenly remembered today that I had started a Wunderblog here.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone! I trust you all had a pretty good holiday! We had a little bit of rain here and there but nothing too extreme.

What we did see was super-low snow levels this past weekend. What a treat for Santa Clarita! Even Oat Mountain above my church was snow-capped for a brief time. Well all that has ended and tonight we're seeing a cut-off low pressure system meander through the region bringing some faux-showers and even a few real ones. It looks like after this we won't see much in the way of any interesting weather for a while and settle into a dry pattern.

But hey, we're way ahead on our yearly rainfall totals. Of course, I'd like to see more rain come through here but I know that the rain we saw in December and even the rains we saw early this year have been against the odds, given the La Nina that is peaking out in the pacific. We really have no business getting as much rainfall as we've got. But like I said, I'll take it.

My weather station is turning a year old this month! This past year it's performed beautifully and served as a great little weather monitoring station. I'm looking forward to many more years from the little guy. Happy Birthday, Studio City Weather Center!

Yup! The rains came, and boy did they come. We saw rain rates surpassing 1.5" per hour at one point today. There are several Flash Flood Warnings in effect. Heavy rain... wind... thunder & lightning... and then this: That makes the whole day worth it.

A quiet morning thus far... deceptively quiet. The funny thing about the stronger thunderstorms is that it needs to get better in order to get worse. The bigger storms don't pop off without some heating from the sun breaking through the clouds. Seeing a few of those breaks now, and we'll wait and see what happens this afternoon. Elsewhere, there's a lot of bad news coming out of the burn areas and rural areas. Several neighborhoods have been inundated by mud & ...

Haha... my Davis Vantage Vue weather station is alerting me to the Ursids meteor shower currently taking place. That's funny. Two celestial events missed due to OVC in as many days. Again I say, oh well. The National Weather Service is starting to use terms like "severe thunderstorms," "large hail," and "tornados" to describe the weather we can expect here in the morning. Ha. Southern Californians have no idea what a severe thunderstorm is until they visit the...

I've tried blogs before, kept them up for a while and lost interest; but this incorporates a hobby of mine, so I hope I can be a little more consistent here. We're in the middle of a nice series of storms here in LA. I can't recall a stretch where we've gotten at least an inch of rain each day for three or four consecutive days. I'm a fan. It's fun to see all this unfold with the proper equipment in place for the first time, too. I'm a little disappointed that th...
