Torrential rains of 40+ inches deluge Thailand

Torrential rains in excess of 40 inches (1.016 meters) deluged Thailand's Malay Peninsula this week, triggering floods that have killed at least 17 people. The floods submerged 61 major highways, affected 840,000 people, and forced the helicopter rescue of thousands of stranded tourists. Late March is usually a fairly dry time of year for Thailand, but near-record cold air settled in over the region this week, dropping temperatures to 5 - 10°C (9 - 18°F) below average. Heavy storms accompanied the cold air, and downpours with rainfall rates of up to 2 inches/hour affected the region for many days in a row. Sea surface temperatures of the waters surrounding the flood regions were near average, but were plenty warm enough to supply copious moisture to feed the storms. Flood recovery will slowed by additional moderately heavy rains of 3 - 5 inches expected to fall over the flooded region during the next week, according to the latest precipitation forecast from the GFS model.

Figure 1. The Multisatellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) analysis above was made using data that were calibrated using data from NASA's TRMM satellite. This analysis shows that rainfall for the past week over the Malay Peninsula was particularly extreme with totals of almost 1200 mm (~47 inches). TRMM satellite data revealed that rainfall in that area was frequently falling at a rate of over 50 mm/hr (~2 inches/hr). Image credit: NASA.

I even heard people stuck on I-4 this morning in Seminole County calling into the radio station i listen to crying because they were stuck on I-4 and the car was being moved by the wind while they were at a dead stop. Amazing power these storms had. I saw the pics from Tampa and I pray that those families can recover from their losses. The damage in Tampa is severe from what I can tell.

The damage is down right extensive here in Pinellas, as tornadoes often do around here, they jump around a lot. Apparently the tornado was coming right at me then went up into the cloud then came back as another tornado on the other side. I am so thankful we didn't get the tornado itself, the damage is crazy enough right around here, its a complete mess. However the tornado damage is much worse.

If you are referring to me then you are wrong as the reason said that is because I saw the wind velocities on the NWS site and it was showing a solid line of 70 mph heading for the Nature Coast of FL. The damage in my area is very bad and there are still tens of thousands without power since yesterday. Never seen anything like this other than the hurricanes of 2004. Some on here flat out need to get a grip. It is sad to see how some act on here. I am very passionate when it comes to wx and i think some get offended if we talk about weather other than politics which seems to be an ongoing depressing political battle nearly everyday.

I am completely agree!

I have been here long enough to recognize a potential familiar pattern.
Is it wishful (rain) thinking on my part?
Or are there any patterns setting up that could repeat the year of training fronts we(SW FL) have seen here in the past?
ie Bonita Springs floods?!
To clarify!
NOT!
wishing for floods.
Just thoughts of rain for the next 8 weeks.
I so dread the next (usually dry) 8 weeks!

Use to live in that area. Been to that dog track many times. Won, 12 out of 14 races one nite........:)

And yes, we need all the rain we can get this time of year during usually dry times until late May when the rains usually come.

Have fun tomorrow.

OH NO!!
Now you've done it.
I was convinced you were sure about these things, so I went and bet the house, car, grandchildren, everything on the dark horse in the 5th race.
And the Bookie just called me from a resort in Bali to say thanks....

Dont know how I'm gonna explain this to my wife in the morning.
She will probably think I'm just April Foolin' her.

Of course Spathy.
Still, I appreciate all the opinions, and it's my responsibility to incorporate them all. Thanks to barefoot and CV as well. Knowing that there's a chance of no rain is an edge. Knowing to keep a lookout for a black or dark bay is an edge. I'll know it if/when it happens.

Hi all
.
.
I have a serious weather related question.
At what time tomorrow do we expect the Florida squall line to pass by Broward/Dade? To be exact, exactly at the county line, on the east side, near...ok, at...Gulfstream Park on US1 and Hallandale Beach Blvd.
.
.
At this time of year I enjoy going to Gulfstream, and the horse racing is something I find fun and profitable. It's profitable because I have an edge, and part of that edge is "playing the weather". The wind direction has an effect. A passing front has an effect. A sloppy wet track has an effect. Knowing in advance when the rain will hit is an edge.

I don't think it's considered a squall line anymore, lol. Maybe some rain, MAYBE. I'm in Jupiter and watched the locals @ noon and they said it would be through @ 5pm and nasty. UMM, how do you screw up a 6hr forecast? Not a drip yet and looks to be an hour or two out as I type. Seems hung up on Lake O? Below is what's left of your squall line, maybe daytime heating tomorrow will come into play, lol.

Well, Zelda says 7 hours and 30 min., cosmic, and it's likely to rain for 3 hours there, maybe a little more.

Zelda also says bet on the black horse, or maybe a dark bay. She's not sure what she's seeing. Dark horse. Guess that could mean a longshot. Anyway, you'll know what it means.
:)

And the SPC pulled the plug on FL severe a couple hours ago. An isolated t-storm possible, but not heavy duty stuff.

Thank you Spathy.
Would have preferred if it came during the races from 1-5, but it is what it is.
You're in on a piece of the Rainbow P6 if I hit it. It's up to 900k. Missed by 1 horse today. Had 5 of 6.
There was a moderately strong southwest wind, an unusual direction. Usually comes from the S-SE or at times the N-NW. The SW wind helped the horses that enjoy coming from behind.
