July 2011: Most extreme July on record for the U.S.
According to the National Climatic Data Center's Climate Extremes Index, July 2011 was the most extreme July on record (since 1910) with a value of 37%. The Climate Extremes Index is created by merging the various climate indicators (drought, flood, extreme heat, extreme cold, etc.) into an index that can be tracked over time. This month's record CEI was due to extreme warm minimum temperatures across the country, wet northern Plains and Great Lakes, extreme warm maximum temperatures, and the severe drought across the South and Gulf Coast.
It was the fourth warmest July on record for the nation, and the fourth warmest month overall with an average temperature of 77°F. Extreme heat continued to bake the South, and Oklahoma and Texas both had their warmest months on record. Oklahoma's statewide average temperature was a remarkable 88.9°F in July, which is the warmest monthly statewide average for any state in any month. Dallas, Texas hit or exceeded 100°F on 30 out of the 31 days in July. For the entire South climate region, which comprises Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi, July 2011 was the warmest month on record for any of the climate regions.
As we noted in a previous blog, an unprecedented area of exceptional drought covered the United States in July, the largest area in the history of the U.S. Drought Monitor. 75% of Texas was in an exceptional drought, and the entire state of Oklahoma was in moderate to exceptional drought in July. The NCDC estimates that it would take 20 inches of rain to end the drought in one month in the worst hit areas of Oklahoma and Texas.

Figure 1. Texas and Oklahoma had its hottest and the state of Washington had its 11th coolest July on record last month, according to the NCDC.

Figure 2. Texas had its second driest July on record, and Oklahoma had its 9th driest according to the NCDC. California continues to be wetter than average, and last month was its 8th wettest July on record.

Whats interesting is both the gfs and the the nogaps show a strong wave entering the windward islands around the same time frame.
It might have something to do with the 'Quote' button at the bottom of the post.
yea could be the start of some more model support everyones been waiting on will have to see if the others do the same
Here where I'm at in Pinellas County, I didn't get that much, but I did get 2.72 today and now 5.2 for the month of August. I had over 16 inches for the month of July so we definitely don't have shortage of rain to say the least lol. Some of the rain today reminded me of tropical cyclone rain bands, very fast moving and very short lived but very heavy and very gusty.
Just for fun, quote this without writing anything, then post the comment. Lets see what shows up.
That would do it...
So highlight, copy/paste... About your only other alternative.
Lightning seems to be letting up. But now I'm beginning to think what that is showing us is that Alabama is invading. :|

I am hanging in there but honestly I am getting a little depressed over this drought.
I live in Oldsmar and got just under 5in. I checked the Pinellas County Weather website which reports downtown Clw and they only got 1.55in
In fact, during the past ten seasons (2001-10), there have been no Atlantic hurricanes during the period August 1-10.
Too funny!!!!
Hey People, Zephyrhills fl here i had 1.20 yesterday and 1.60 today. have 4.15 for the month. I was in Tampa today and the rain was never ending and very heavy at times. Lots of thunder and lightning.

Hey, Did you get much rain over on the east side of the state today?
Florida is a funny state, it is on average, one of the sunniest, yet one of the wettest. We do have occasional overcast days like today. But most days that we get heavy rain we also get sun. This combination of sea breezes, lots of sun, and lots of moisture is why Florida gets so much lightning activity.
As you might know, on days like today, we still get lightning but it seems only the strongest storms produce large amounts of dangerous lightning, the rest are most heavy tropical showers with occasional lightning.
But on the sunny days, pretty much every storm produces large amounts of dangerous lightning, and strong to severe storms produce lightning that still blows my mind even after living here for 15 years.
I agree with that, Just don't see the amount of storms we saw 4 or 5 years ago. Can't set you watch by them like you could years ago.
Yeah, those ones I don't even call thunderstorms. They're electrical storms. We had one not too long ago 1,500 strikes in 15 minutes. That morning was crazy...
That was there this morning, old man. :-)
I live south of there, closer to safety harbor.
