July 2011: Most extreme July on record for the U.S.
Posted by: Dr. Jeff Masters, 16:43 GMT le 09 août 2011 +20
According to the National Climatic Data Center's Climate Extremes Index, July 2011 was the most extreme July on record (since 1910) with a value of 37%. The Climate Extremes Index is created by merging the various climate indicators (drought, flood, extreme heat, extreme cold, etc.) into an index that can be tracked over time. This month's record CEI was due to extreme warm minimum temperatures across the country, wet northern Plains and Great Lakes, extreme warm maximum temperatures, and the severe drought across the South and Gulf Coast.

It was the fourth warmest July on record for the nation, and the fourth warmest month overall with an average temperature of 77°F. Extreme heat continued to bake the South, and Oklahoma and Texas both had their warmest months on record. Oklahoma's statewide average temperature was a remarkable 88.9°F in July, which is the warmest monthly statewide average for any state in any month. Dallas, Texas hit or exceeded 100°F on 30 out of the 31 days in July. For the entire South climate region, which comprises Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi, July 2011 was the warmest month on record for any of the climate regions.

As we noted in a previous blog, an unprecedented area of exceptional drought covered the United States in July, the largest area in the history of the U.S. Drought Monitor. 75% of Texas was in an exceptional drought, and the entire state of Oklahoma was in moderate to exceptional drought in July. The NCDC estimates that it would take 20 inches of rain to end the drought in one month in the worst hit areas of Oklahoma and Texas.

Figure 1. Texas and Oklahoma had its hottest and the state of Washington had its 11th coolest July on record last month, according to the NCDC.

Figure 2. Texas had its second driest July on record, and Oklahoma had its 9th driest according to the NCDC. California continues to be wetter than average, and last month was its 8th wettest July on record.

I have a blog question.

How do you quote a post?
Thx!

It might have something to do with the 'Quote' button at the bottom of the post.

I'm pushing 6" of rainfall today here in Odessa in northern Hillsborough co, fl.

Almost a foot this month so far

Here where I'm at in Pinellas County, I didn't get that much, but I did get 2.72 today and now 5.2 for the month of August. I had over 16 inches for the month of July so we definitely don't have shortage of rain to say the least lol. Some of the rain today reminded me of tropical cyclone rain bands, very fast moving and very short lived but very heavy and very gusty.

Good point. Seen to many of em fizzle out between here and Milton lately. This one looks pretty fierce on radar though. Strange thing is, the radar shows a ton of lightning well out ahead of it.

Lightning seems to be letting up. But now I'm beginning to think what that is showing us is that Alabama is invading. :|

Looking at Austins temps the last 44 days, over 100 42 of those days, 99 the other 2 days. My coolest day the past 44 is 100 so that is 44 straight days of 100 or greater and 62 for the year for me. 21 straight days was the Old record. There is no reason we won't be over 100 every day the rest of the month unless something tropical moves into Texas.

I am hanging in there but honestly I am getting a little depressed over this drought.

Interesting fact from Dr. Knabb's FB page.

In fact, during the past ten seasons (2001-10), there have been no Atlantic hurricanes during the period August 1-10.

Looks like a low level weak vort headed west to east across central FL, headed right for the mid level vort that gathered up off SEFL earlier today. Decent chance we may see an invest in the next few days off ECFL move away, following Emily.

Welcome to Florida, the Sunshine State. :)

Florida is a funny state, it is on average, one of the sunniest, yet one of the wettest. We do have occasional overcast days like today. But most days that we get heavy rain we also get sun. This combination of sea breezes, lots of sun, and lots of moisture is why Florida gets so much lightning activity.

As you might know, on days like today, we still get lightning but it seems only the strongest storms produce large amounts of dangerous lightning, the rest are most heavy tropical showers with occasional lightning.

But on the sunny days, pretty much every storm produces large amounts of dangerous lightning, and strong to severe storms produce lightning that still blows my mind even after living here for 15 years.

I agree with that, Just don't see the amount of storms we saw 4 or 5 years ago. Can't set you watch by them like you could years ago.

Yeah, those ones I don't even call thunderstorms. They're electrical storms. We had one not too long ago 1,500 strikes in 15 minutes. That morning was crazy...

re: Post #344 -- don't know if I remember anything "loop-ier" than Jeanne or Opal, but one of the freakiest things I ever saw was Ivan. After that spectacular run of his, and charging on up into the Northeast, that center circulation broke free of all the rain, got out into the Atlantic, charged south and then across Florida, and got back into the Gulf. Darned but I think it even walked across the Gulf to Texas!
