winter half over

End of January is basically the half way mark for winter,and I think most of us here in the Northeast can feel pretty happy with the easy winter we have had,and with the rising oil prices,it has saved us a lot of money.February can be a rough month,but there is little signs of the weather pattern changing.In fact tomorrow the first day of February should be in the 50's.Back to normal temps for the end of the week and weekend.A couple of threats for some precip,but nothing big at this time.
Today is media day in Indianapolis.This is usually a wild event,with media from all over the world asking the athletes everything from what their favourite cereal is to one woman asking Tom Brady to marry her the last time the Patriots were in the superbowl.This year for the first time fans will be allowed to ask questions,so it could get even crazier.Athletes must dread this day.

January warmth

I had a nice long weekend,and the non January weather continued.This will go down as one of the warmest Januarys.It'll be interesting to see where it ranks.There have been more days in the 40's than 30's or 20's.That is not normal for January.
And it looks like February will open the same way reaching at least 50.Almost every week this winter has featured at least one day hitting the 50 degree mark.And lack of winter snows is also noticeable.
This week will feature some flurries this morning,a little light snow tomorrow morning as a warm front lifts through the region. A coastal storm will slip by south of us on Friday,and possible coastal storm next Sunday,but that is a long way off and the way this winter is going,don't expect much.
Superbowl week starts with the media really ramping up.So back to a full week again.Looks to be a busy day catching up on my backlog.

weather patterns

weather patterns are strange,some can last for months others will last a month or two.Especially in the winter,the first half of the winter will be locked in with one pattern and suddenly shift half way through the winter.Some winters hold on to the same pattern all winter.The current above normal temps and storm track have really been in place since early last fall and there are no signs this is going to change in the near future. In fact it looks like it will hold through most of February.There will be small winter outbreaks,but the artic air which is up there,just doesn't have the mechanisms and pattern to bring it down except for brief periods.So you still get the storms,but with a lack of really cold air,you get a mixed bag,and also the threat of ice storms,and that is what is in store for us tomorrow night with rain in eastern portions,mix in central areas and a threat of a serious ice storm west and especially in vermont and new hampshire.This will be something to watch,a lot of precip with this system which will come right over southern new england so we amy get a real warmup in southern new england.

back to normal

so we've fallen back to normal or slightly above normal temps.And that is where should stay for into next week,no real warm days and no artic air in sight.We do have a couple of systems to watch.
The first will be tomorrow night,should mostly rain coastal areas,and inland may have a period of mix or ice,but all rain by tomorrow morning.
Then we have to watch a coastal storm this weekend,Saturday night into Sunday,but a this time,doesn't look like a big deal and again,not a lot of cold air around to work with,but with all coastal storms needs to be watched,things change quickly.

Spring in January

This much above normal winter continues. This winter pattern continues,with brief cold spells and then a period of much above normal temps.Only 9.5 inches of snow so far.We hit 52 degrees during the night.Should remain in the 40's close to 50 today even with the passing of a cold front. As second cold front will pass tonight,and cool us down,but still be a few degrees above normal.A system will effect us on Thursday night,a snow/rain line will set up in central New England,depending on the track.
A more important storm on Sunday,but track and impact are still up in the air.

On to Indianapolis

Ok,so nobody told me watching football could be hazardous to your health.Glad nobody took my blood pressure at the end of the game yesterday.
So before anyone comes and tells me how lucky they were,we here in New England know that.
Tom Brady had a horrible game,Joe Flacco out played him,but in the end it was who would make the last mistake and Baltimore did that.To be honest they should have won,but it didn't fall that way and we can be happy about that.
Our defense came up great,making so many big plays when they had to.And now we get a superbowl rematch with the NY Giants,when SF made a last minute mistake fumbling the punt.And thats what happens in these big games between the top teams,who will make the last mistake.
I just don't know if I can't survive another game like that.
Anyway,we a little light precip this morning with below freezing temps,but nothing major to report,I've seen a little snow/sleet showers.
Temps on the rise into the 40's by evening,even 50 in some of the soutern areas.Should be above normal most of the week.

stormy pattern

Looking forward to the coming week,it looks very stormy,but its not clear cut what form of precip.Track and cold air availability will play a big factor as most winter storms.
The first storm is more clear cut as a strong storm moves up through the great lakes tomorrow.As a warm front moves up over New England with a snow pack it will be hard to move out the cold air at the surface so there may be a period of freezing rain or drizzle after midnight tonight and early tomorrow morning,especially inland.As the day progresses it should slowly warm above freezing by afternoon,so it should stop the freezing precip.Then in the evening as a cold front approaches heavier rain should set in with rising temps into the 40's.
Tuesday should be dry,but still much above normal,with temps well into the 40's with a few low 50's south.
The next storm Thursday night should move south of new england and shouldn't be much.Maybe some light snow,and depending on how much cold air is around maybe a mix.
Then a brief break then a possibly a major storm next weekend,but still uncertain,for rain or snow,but this could be a major storm.

light snow

We continue this periods of light snow.2 inches yesterday and more light snow today with about 3 inches on the ground and probably one more inch before ending later this afternoon.Snow is not coming down very hard in my area,the heavier snow rates are south of boston.
Then we get rain on Monday,which may wash away most of this snow.

active weather pattern

So like winter can get we are in a very active pattern from coast to coast with the west coast getting the worst of it.There is a very large moisture plume that is being grabbed as a series of upper lows move into the west coast and dump a lot of QPF.Some unusually large amount of snow in the NW cities which have brought things to a standstill,but warmer air is moving in now changing the lower levels to heavy rain.This moisture moves across the country and loses its punch,but smaller systems are giving us here in the northeast a series of small systems. We will get a couple of inches tonight and on saturday,a heavier snowfall will give some areas a 3-6 inch snowfall.
So you really didn't think we would get through the winter without any snow did you?
Nothing major but it will definitely look winter for a while with a warmup possibly for next week.

winter roller coaster

This winter is turning into a wild ride.Over the weekend,temps were in the single numbers with below zero windchills.Last night at 2 AM it was 50 degrees
Since then it has dropped to the low 30's and winds are gusting to 40 to 50.
Tomorrow night another quick couple of inches of snow,another system for late Saturday and Saturday night,but unsure whether it will be snow or mixed,it will depend on track and how much warm air gets entrained into the system.Lots of uncertainty going into next week also.

first snowfall of the winter

Ok,its 2 inches,but the ground is white,I had to shovel the driveway,or should I say scrape the driveway,but it is a snowfall and possibly two more snowfalls in the next several days.Again tomorrow night into Thursday,and again Saturday.Nothing big,but a few inches here and a few inches there and we end up with 5 or 6 inches by the end of the weekend.
Right now looking ahead,and unsettled pattern into next week, with several small disturbances and just enough cold air to give most of our area a snowfall.
Busy day ahead so will be in and out at times.Have a great day.

Winter weekend

It finally felt like winter this weekend.It was cold on Saturday,but downright frigid on Sunday.A high of 21 on Sunday with a low of 3 degrees.6 degrees this morning,but warming above freezing this afternoon.In the 40's tomorrow with rain in the east a mix and freezing rain central and west tonight and tomorrow morning,but all rain as the day goes on.Colder windy weather Wednesdy into Thursday,chance of some light snow Thursday night,some light precip Saturday night,and warmer on Sunday.So the rollercoaster continues.Long range shows above normal temps the last to end January.
Exciting weekend of NFL playoffs,with the Patriots showing no mercy on the Broncos.So much for the higher power involved.
We shall face the Ravens next Sunday,and not impressed with the Ravens win yesterday,if it wasn't for rookie quarterback decisions,I think Houston would have won that game.
The two favourites got knocked out,SF knocked out NO,and the Giants knocked off GB,Giants looked to be the favourites right now the way their playing.
Should be a fun day next Sunday.
My wife is doing much better,after her painful gastro attack on Thursday night.She is still having discomfort after she eats and has to be very careful what she eats.What a long night,I had to work overtime until 10 pm and then was up all night in the emergency room.There isn't any worse than going to the emergency room.
We arrived at 2 a.m in the morning and didn't get home until 2 pm the next day.
Thankfully it wasn't anything to do with the heart

Mixed bag in the northeast.

I thought we would get just rain in my area,but its been switching between snow and rain all morning,but no accumulation,at times the ground starts to whiten,but then it changes back to rain.A cold E and SE wind 10 to 20 makes it really makes it miserable to be out in this weather.Farther inland they are getting some accumulation as much as 2-4 inches and in Vermont and New Hampshire,4-8 inches,and very heavy wet snow.Great snowball making snow.
Precip should taper off this afternoon,should be mild in the 40's,more showers tonight and early tomorrow morning,then the cold artic air sets in for late tomorrow and this weekend.

Storm watch

Well,we get our first nor'easter,but for eastern and southern areas this will turn out to be mostly a rain storm, while inland and northern new england we have a period of heavy wet snow,and ski areas should make out big time.
The storm track is just too close to bring a lot of cold air into this storm.The main storm moves up into the Great lakes while a secondary forms along the mid-atlantic coast,which many times causees the cold air to be pulled in,but this secondary should track up close to the south coast and over cape cod,and bring a lot of warm air in southern and eastern areas.Should be some very strong winds with this system also.

winter makes a weak appearance

Well,we sort of have a winter pattern.Just before dawn we got a little dusting of snow,and there is a nor'easter arriving Wednesday night,but is going to make a very close pass to new england and should introduce too much warm air for a major snow storm.Inland areas may get some snow,but most of the snowfall should be in northern New England the danger with this storm is the possiblity of a period of ice where the cold air gets trapped.The main storm system will move into the Great Lakes,but a secondary will form off the New Jersey or mid-atlantic coast which will keep a lot cold air in,but warmer air will ride up over the cold air at the surface,will have to watch this closely.
After this storm system moves by on Thursday then we have to contend with an upper air low on Friday which may set off snow/rain showers,then some artic air will stream in for the weekend.Should be a cold night at Gillette stadium for the Denver/New England playoff game.Something Tebow won't be too accustomed to.

non-winter weekend

So on Thanksgiving weekend,I decorated the yard,in 60 degree weather,Saturday I undecortated the yard in 60 degree weather.Don't think that has ever happened,since I started to decorate the yard.Many thanks to Mother Nature.
But back to normal this morning,and watching a nor'easter for Thursday.Right now looks to be mostly rain for my area,but inland and up north may get some accumulating heavy wet snow.As with most nor'easters the track matters,plus how strong the high in the maritime gets will determine how much cold air gets drawn in,this will have to be watched.
Anyway after the storm moves by,much colder air moves in for the weekend.
It was an exciting weekend in sports,our hockey time played a rematch with the Vancouver Canucks,the only time these two teams meet,and it was not a friendly game.Bruins gave this game away with all the penalties,but it was strange officiating.
NFL wild card games went more or less according to plan except for the Broncos Steelers game.Don't think anyone predicted the Broncos.So Tim Tebow gets to play the patriots again,this time in New England.

snow!!!

We had snow this morning!!!!I know it snowed,because I see a little dusting on the edges of my wind shield.If I looked real hard on the ground I might be able to spot a few flakes in the grass.I almost thought about the commercial where the guy gets the snowblower ready when a flake comes floating down out of the air.
Anyway a warmup starts today,up into the 40's,then tomorrow,we may actually hit 50,before a front goes through and we drop back to normal for Monday and Tuesday,then another big warmup for Wednesday,before a big storm moves through for Thursday into Friday,with mostly rain,although some higher elevations and northern areas may see some ice at the start and end.This something to watch next week.
NFL playoffs start this weekend,Patriots get to sit and watch the first weekend.Probably the most interesting game will be Pittsburg at Denver,and all the Tebow mania,but don't see Denver coming close to beating the Steeler.
The first week can be dangerous so there may be some upsets.
Our Bruins continue to rampage through the NHL,beating up on Calgary 9-0 last night.The real interesting game comes this Saturday when the Vancouver Canucks come to town.The first meeting of these two teams since the Bruins beat them in the Stanley Cup last spring.

Changing patterns

This has been one strange winter so far,although it still has a long way to go,no signs of any wintery pattern as yet.On Blizz's blog,he mentions the last half of January may change to a colder pattern,but still not the kind of pattern that is conducive to large storms.
I still appears to be a winter I indicated back in the fall,that would have lots of fluctuations,but this appears to be a winter where we will get into a colder winter type pattern,but not for long stretches.
We've concluded a short artic cold spell,and this morning was 24 as compared to 6 yesterday.A warming trend this weekend,then a cold front on sunday gets us back to normal on Sunday and the first part of next week,with another warmup possible mid week.
Still no big snows in sight.Wish we could get some snow up to the north where it belongs,winter resorts are suffering.Cross country and snowmobilers are out of business right now.At least its been cold enough for ski resorts to make snow.

COLD!!!!

It took until Jan.4th to get a single digits,and this will be only one morning.A gradual warmup going into this weekend.Have to watch what happens with a coastal storm and how close it gets and how much cold air it has to work with.
So heading into next week,a couple of storms to watch along the coast.Not a lot of cold air around to work with,so for southenr New England could be a mix of precip.
Took my walk with Prince last night and definitely the coldest night of the season.Of course he didn't mind it,except when were heading into the wind,but we had the neighborhood to ourselves.Once real winter weather sets in,prince and I have the walk to ourselves.

temps going down

Well,we've had it nice through the fall and the first part of the winter,but Mother Nature is going to give us a brief reminder that this is winter.
The next two days will be very cold and today and tonight very low windchills.Below zero chills tonight. I guess me and Prince will have to do our walk early before it really gets bad.
This artic air will be a brief visit and out of here by Thursday.Getting back to normal temps and even above normal by the weekend.Chance of a few flurries a couple of times as the warm air moves in,but most of it will be in Northern new England.
Still no big storms in sight,but will have to watch a gulf storm Sun or Mon ,but right now looks to move out south of us.
Iowa causcaus today,which starts the parade of primaries.New Hampshire next week.No clear favourites and I can't get warmed up to anyone.
Patriots won again,but after overcoming a 21-0 first period deficit,seems to be their MO,get down early and explode the rest of the way out.Don't think they can do that in the playoffs,the important thing is they have a bye next week to see who they will play.
