WEATHER NEWS

Thousands of people in the east of England have been told to evacuate their homes and move treasured possessions to higher ground before tomorrow morning in advance of a devastating storm surge.

Some 10,000 homes and businesses will be affected, according to the Environment Agency, which has issued seven severe flood warnings for people living on the Norfolk and Suffolk coast near Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft.

Environment Secretary Hilary Benn warned the Commons of a potential serious flooding risk on the east coast in the next 48 hours.

Gordon Brown tonight convened Cobra, the emergency panel of government officials, to anticipate the floods.

Sea levels will surge to three metres above usual tidal levels as a result of north-westerly winds and a pocket of low pressure. The wind, which the Met Office predicts will blow up to 60mph, will funnel water from the wider part of the North Sea in the north to the narrower part in the south, causing a build-up that will arrive on the Norfolk coast between 7am and 9am tomorrow. The winds will be compounded by low pressure, which causes sea levels to rise. If pressure decreases by one millibar, the sea level rises by one centimetre.

Hi Skyepony,
Hi Rainman, Aqua and everybody else...

Mia and I would like to thank you for your help and support on Thursday night. There are still flood warnings active for our area, but there is no immediate danger to lives or property. It has been a tense 48 hours and knowing that you are all here has been a BIG boost!

Many, many thanks from the bottom of our hearts, take care one and all,
Papsis

Quick look at the weather news looks pretty boring. No active storms & the news is all how to get ready for winter & the dangers of aphiciation from Carbon Monoxide.

Morning all:)

Yeah Wabit that tooth of mine said....ssleeeepp.

Jeff e-mailed me back. I thought that article was off. It made it sould like NOAA was just making it public. Apparently the guys got awards of bravery & that's how it's come up again. He past along this article.

Aquak9~ Nice to see that has got vetoed. Looked like it was expected to be by yesterdays article. Christ has suprised me. Forcing FPL to make the solar plant was another good one. Good for the everglades & all the other projects. To think we are above taking care of our water sources is foolish.

Looks like Mexico has til the 1st of the year to defend their food sovereignty & prevent thier food culture from being rolled under by GM big ag.

I love the protest by planting corn everywhere. Good luck, it's certainly worth the fight. No matter how hindered by all the recent flooding.

I do indeed go to bed Mia, just not very often. I only get about 7 hours a night and sometimes less. Lately I have been getting to sleep around 3AM and waking around 9AM.

Glad to help! =) We care

Now, the best thing to do is stay calm. I went through the Derecho of 1998.. winds clocked 130mph for about 20mins only a couple miles to my north that early AM (still dark outside then) and I have also been through a small tornado. The best thing to do is stay calm

The English Channel is approximately 350 miles long, and at its narrowest in the Strait of Dover. It's somewhat shallow, with an average depth of less than 50 meters between Dover and Calais.

Completed in 1994, the Channel Tunnel, a 31 mile long rail tunnel beneath the English Channel at the Straits of Dover, connects France and England.

Mia, I'm sure you're ready, but a review may not be a bad thing!

What to do When you Hear a Flood Warning

* Listen out for warnings on radio and TV and phone Floodline on 0845 988 1188 for more information.
* Move pets, vehicles, valuables and other items to safety.
* Alert your neighbours, particularly the elderly.
* Put sandbags or flood boards in place - but make sure your property is ventilated. Plug sinks/baths and put a sandbag in the toilet bowl to prevent backflow.
* Be ready to turn off gas and electricity (get help if needed). Unplug electrical items and move them upstairs if possible.
* Co-operate with emergency services and local authorities - you may be evacuated to a rest centre.
* Do as much as you can in daylight. Doing anything in the dark will be a lot harder, especially if the electricity fails.

Stay Safe in a Flood

* Do not be tempted to go and watch the waves come in – they are dangerous and you will be putting yourself at risk.
* Listen to the local news and to the emergency services who will advise if evacuation is necessary and check on elderly relatives and make sure they are ok.
* Floods can kill. Don't try to walk or drive through floodwater - six inches of fast flowing water can knock you over and two feet of water will float your car. Manhole covers may have come off and there may be other hazards you can’t see.
* Never try to swim through fast flowing water - you may get swept away or be struck by an object in the water.
* Don't walk on sea defences, riverbanks or cross river bridges if possible - they may collapse in extreme situations or you may be swept off by large waves. Beware of stones and pebbles being thrown up by waves.
