It's just past 7pm here in Elizabeth City, and the first bit of rain from Irene is crossing the Albemarle Sound into Pasquotank County right now. It's overcast, slightly muggy, with light winds. There's a pall over the town; everyone is just watching and waiting.

More once the rain gets into the city itself.

5:30 AM ESTStill quite dark here in Elizabeth City. About an hour from sunrise, but all indications are that things are clear. Had a few t-storms pop up around the area overnight that didn't last very long, and didn't dump any sort of precip here in town.Final prep today. Things should start going downhill in the next 12 hours. Until then, we wait.

However, the OFFICIAL Hurricane Warnings are in effect for the area. It's 9pm in Elizabeth City. My Facebook friends all say the same general thing; Preparations have been made, people are hunkering down, and the stores are bare. Dare and Currituck Counties are evacuating, and shelters are being set up further west. The local schools will be letting kids ...

Well, it's 1pm here in NE NC. Drove out to finalize Irene prep, and the chaos has descended upon the town. Wal-Mart, Food Lion and Lowe's are all insanely busy. As usual (for this area at least) the bad drivers are out too. Passed two different car accidents on the way to Radio Shack. Managed to snag a portable battery powered 3.5" digital TV for the storm at a reasonable price. If I could afford a generator, then I'd be set. This will have to do.Weather is quite ho...
