The Raspberry Patch's Gardens of 2010
Posted by: TheRasberryPatch, 18:07 GMT le 26 mai 2010 +0
I am starting a bit early, but I thought let's get some early pictures of the gardens and the nice colors already. From the pictures, I am not a professional photographer. Sorry. I probably needed to zoom a bit on some of the flowers around the pool...oh well

My vegetables are finally starting to take off. I didn't get my gardens going until mid to late April. I actually lost my tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers to a late freeze/frost on May 10th.

My potatoes are doing very well. I have been very vigilant with the P I A Colorado Potato Beetles. Since I grow the potatoes in the same place every year the beetles know where to look. I don't know enough about them, but I get the impression they winter in the soil and then come out in late Spring to lay their orange eggs on the underside of the potato leaves. I hope this year my vigilance has been so good I won't need to use Sevin.

For the most part most of the flowers are just getting started. The roses have been blooming for a couple of weeks now. We just potted the annuals last Saturday and looking forward to them flourishing around the pool. We actually had plenty of extra, so we planted some around the arborvitae.

All the way down where the weather instruments are located their is a garden...I have melons and pumpkins and sunflowers growing there...I hope the birds stay away to get some nice color...They already have eaten a lot of the melon leaves.

Great garden Rasberry, and your yard looks so pristine and clean! Puts my yard to shame! LOL

BTW in case you didn't know, I'm going by this new name now (used to be synthman).

Hey, Carolina....thanks...I have plenty of time to work on my garden. Yes, i saw in Blizz's blog you changed your name.
I guess your garden is farther along. I know when I have visited OBX in mid June a lot of the corn is 5 feet tall.

Yeah our corn is already 3 to 4 feet tall. Only the strawberries, blueberries, and broccoli are producing fruit/vegetables right now, but we're starting to get little squashes developing now and the green beans are not far behind. Peaches are getting bigger too, though the tree is young (in fact this is the first year of it producing fruit, and I had to pull off most of them) so it might not be a big producer this time around. There's (thornless) blackberries and grapes too, and more but I forgot LOL! My uncle planted TONS of stuff over here, including "Florida Giant" watermelons that (according to him) can get up to 200 pounds! I have a hard time believing that, but we'll see. I'll be sure to get pics IF they do get that big! LOL

wow Carolina....that is some garden going there...

do you have a problem with critters getting to the watermelon? I just don't have luck with melons or even pumpkin. the critters like it.
What kind of grapes? I have been wanting to do grapes, but unsure of how much work they can be to take care. I was actually thinking of a wine grape

Ahhh
Just in time!
Just as us Southerners are ending most of our gardening.
We can now live vicariously via yours and others gardens.
On the potato beetle problem.
There is an organic product called Milky Spore.
The version I am familiar with has no directions for vegi gardens.
So I cant sell it for that.
Its a bacteria that feeds on soil born insects like beetle grub worms.
It should live in the ground for at least 20 years.
I have always meant to do more research on it and find labeling for vegi gardening.
Good to see ya back Rasp!
Great shots as always :0)

Never really had any problems with melons, other than the occasional rotten ones, if they sit on over-saturated soil too long. We've had problems with the soil itself though, as it was too sour one year (we tried a new area of the yard) and it yielded small and flavorless melons. We've added lime since then.

He planted a wide variety; Blueberry grapes, Crimson grapes, and Black Spanish grapes, just to name a few. Honestly I'm not sure how to take care of them myself, as this is our first year. Since they're my uncle's, he tends to them, but I'd like to learn too...

Ah must be that time of year! Beautiful pictures; you have a wonderful plot of land. My potatoes in my barrels are doing great and are already about 1.5ft tall!

Spathy - Thanks. I will look into Milky Spore, but when I looked up about the potato beetle pretty much the only thing I have seen to get rid of them was Sevin or squash them and rotate your crops. I can't believe your gardens are done already. I guess most vegetables don't do well in the sweltering summer heat, huh

Carolina - Limes sound great...as in lime tree? i wish i could have a lime tree and lemon....i love making lemonade from fresh lemons and using the limes to make mojitos. I have mint growing. Grapes are so delicious when sweet. I hope you get good info on how to take care of them...I have heard you have to watch out for certain bugs.

Blizz - Thanks...yep it's that time of the year...a bit early for my garden blog, but I had some time and i like looking at the before and after pictures. that is great your potatoes are doing so well. any flowers on them? I am just starting to see flower buds.

Calcium oxide (we call it Lime) is a substance you can mix into the soil that helps balance out the pH values. It's really helped the plants so far this year! :)

You have the acidic soil out east, here in the southwest it is alkaline. So we add peat to help neutralize it. Your yard is looking great again Ras.!

Carolina - too funny...and here i was thinking you were talking about lime trees...so you neutralized the soil...

Thanks calpoppy...yes we are always adding lime to the grass around here...once a year usually late November. I also add it to my gardens when i am cleaning them up in the Fall.

LOL I wish we did have lime trees! My cousin does have an orange tree that does "OK" but I don't think it's really thriving. We're about as far north as you can get to grown citrus; once you get up into VA then it's pretty hard for them to survive, at least this is what I've heard...

I grow lime and orange trees in my greenhouse, we are to cold for them to be outside. Even if this is California we are high in elevation and therefore get some pretty cold temps. We just had snow last Sunday!

My latest pictures. I harvested the potatoes yesterday. What a workout. It took me three hours to finally get them all out of the garden.
I have harvested I bet over 200 cucumbers from my other garden. Red onion and yellow beans. Plenty of grape tomatoes. yum yum they are so good.

Hi Raspberry
Just thought I would give your blog a bump.
Do you have any fall crops coming along?
Member Since: 8 juin 2008 Posts: 65 Comments: 10529
27. TheRasberryPatch 00:48 GMT le 07 septembre 2010
Thanks spathy...

no i don't do any fall crops. by this time of the year i am ready to clean up the yard and pool and enjoy the Autumn weather as well as enjoy my kids playing sports. I did grow pumpkins this summer and have a few big ones as well as the miniture pumpkins.

I made some really tasty pickles and am now about to start making sauerkraut, hopefully in time for Thanksgiving

The last two years I had no luck with Fall crops, so this year I will not be making the attempt, lol.

Sauerkraut!
Cool.
We are eating Reubens as I type.
Oh pics of Pumpkins please?
Those pics of fishing around OC?
Are the Flounder coming back to the door mat size they used to be in the early 70s?
And good for you to get the cool rods and reels for the new fisherladies and fishermen:0)
My cousins tell me it was a great spring for the vegi garden and then things went to Hades in a hot dry basket.
Was it the same in Pa as it was in S Maryland?
Good to see ya:0)

spathy - i will get you some pumpkin pics in a day or so.
yes, sauerkraut. I made it last year and it was so good. you can't beat homemade sauerkraut. so tasty
yes, those are pics in OCMD - Assawoman Bay. The flounder are very big doormats. Not easy to catch. You have to sort through the less than 19" throwbacks to get to the doormats. The pictures from the Coastal Fisherman are all of big doormats. Would love to filet one of those. Suprisingly, those rods and reels aren't so bad. The work well for the bay.

Blizz - fall crops are nice, but it's time to clean up the garden and not have to worry about the garden. I hope to remember to plant garlic this year. I seem to forget about it every November
