Dennis just before landfall

Dennis was the second major hurricane to impact the area in less than a year, with Ivan making landfall in 2004. Dennis was also the second hurricane of the 2005 season. Hurricane force winds went about 40 miles outward from the center, with tropical storm force winds covering a much larger area from SW Albama eastward to Tallahassee. Most of the damage with Dennis occured in the Florida Panhandle and southern Alabama. The remnants of Dennis were also responsible for inland flooding.

There was also a bit of irony with Dennis- the road leading to Fort Pickens on the western end of Pensacola Beach had been washed out by Ivan, and was schelduled to open just one day after Dennis made landfall. The storm surge washed out the road once again, and hasn't been repaired since.

According to NOAA's Hurricane Research Division, the eye of Dennis made landfall over eastern Pensacola Beach, and continued northward over Gulf Breeze and the bay (As seen below). The strongest winds in Dennis occured over the Gulf Islands National Seashore. There aren't any observations taken there, so it's unknown how strong winds were in this area. The strongest winds recorded with Dennis were found in Navarre, which was slightly to the east of the most intense winds. Here are some of the gusts from around the area as Dennis made landfall-

Crestview: 58mph
Panama City: 73mph
Destin: 81mph
Pensacola: 95mph
Eglin: 104mph
Navarre: 121mph
*The anemometers in Pensacola and Navarre failed after these observations

Wind Analysis done by the HRD showing landfall and strongest winds.

Dennis was a compact storm, and most of the wind damage occured in the Florida Panhandle. The surge associated with Dennis affected the coastline of Mississippi, stretching east over most of the western Florida coast. Surge was about 6-10 feet at landfall, with waves of 10-15 feet. Dennis also spawned 10 tornadoes over Florida and Georgia. The damage from Dennis in the U.S. totaled 2.23 billion dollars.

The areas hit by Dennis have mostly recovered, although some damage can still be seen along the beaches. The road connecting Navarre and Pensacola Beach has been worked on, but still hasn't been completely repaired. Hopefully we won't wave to deal with anymore storms like Dennis for a very long time to come!!

High pressure has built over the area, and has brought in some very hot temperatures! Highs are in the mid 90's through lower 100's over most of the Southeast, with heat indices above 105 in many places. This heat is expected to last until Thursday, with a little relief arriving on Friday. Rain chances are low in most places, so it doesn't look like there will be anything to help suppress the heat :(
