An Impressive Northern Lights Show
Posted by: Angela Fritz, 05:10 GMT le 25 octobre 2011 +8
The United States saw a pretty impressive showing of the aurora borealis on Monday night!

What's usually reserved for Canada was seen as far south as Arkansas. According to spaceweather.com, a coronal mass ejection (CME), reached Earth at around 2pm EDT on Monday, which compressed the planet's magnetic field and provided the natural fireworks show. Apparently, the CME was strong enough that it could have affected satellites.

Awesome pictures, Angela. Thanks! I've lived in and visited Northern tier states--Minnesota, Montana, etc.--so I've seen the aurora any number of times. But I've never seen this amount of red. Amazing...

I missed it! Some friends in rural Maryland/VA saw the aurora borealis but in Baltimore they were all washed out by city lights. Rats.

We missed it here, too. There were some reports from central California that people saw it, but we had no chance, being in the Bay Area. Admittedly, I didn't even go outside to try. :P

At least we can see Jupiter. Brightest this week for the next 10 years, peaking on Oct 29. I can see him in between the clouds now :)
