Central MD Weather Conditions

storms this weekend in Maryland
Posted by: cws6196, 14:06 GMT le 24 Mars 2012 +0
As you have already noticed, there will be rain this weekend. There is a lull in the activity now, but more is on the way as a low pressure system and cold front moves into the area.

TIMING: Rain will be off and on all throughout the weekend, ending late Sunday.

PRECIP: All rain, heavy at times, local amounts could be 2+ inches.

STORMS: Thunderstorms are possible, and some may have hail in them. The greatest risk for storms is in S MD, closer to the instability in VA. The Storm Prediction Center places the areas south of Baltimore in a 2% chance for tornadoes, 5% for strong winds and 5% for hail. Central and Northern VA have a higher chance for this to occur, and with S MD so close we will need to keep an eye on it.

FUTURE: I hate to even mention this, but there is wider talk about it now and I would like you to hear it from me first. Model data is hinting at a possible snow event for us around April 1. Before you think I am totally nuts, I am not forecasting this, just mentioning it. But, snow in April has happened here, and actually, the last time it happened we experienced a Winter similar to this one. But, if there is any snow I do not see it accumulating as the ground has warmed and the earth's tilt to the sun gives us a better angle for quicker melting. Around April 1 there is to be a strong low pressure system in New England, bringing them much snow, and us the back end of the counter clockwise spin of the low.

Next week we will see more seasonal temps, meaning daytime highs in the 60s and evening lows in the 30s. There is a risk of frost and freezing mid week, so look at protecting plants or not planting until next week.

Storms possible Fri/Sat

Just a quick note (busy at the moment) to mention the possibility of thunderstorms and even severe storms late tonight into Saturday. The risk for severe weather is more so for Southern MD and east of Baltimore, but a risk that close to the rest of us is something to be aware of. I will have a more detailed update either late tonight or in the morning. Keep an eye on the sky and your weather radios on.

snow this Sunday?
Posted by: cws6196, 14:24 GMT le 01 Mars 2012 +0
I know - I said I wasn't going to do this, but I have no choice - there is a chance for "snow" this coming Sunday into Monday. Yes, I said it. Even though I stand by my previous post when I stated I did not think we would see snow, the model data has been consistent and the NWS has now mentioned it on their long range forecast.

The deal is a clipper system moving into the area later Sunday. Historically clippers are not large snow producers for us, and given the time of the year I wouldn't expect much from this. Assuming this happens we could see a couple inches late Sunday night. Nothing major. This does not include Southern MD.

I will keep you updated as conditions warrant, but give me a day or so before I say too much more in the event it fizzles.
