Lil Snow for Chi/ Road Trip Blog
">

February 12, 2012 -
It's been a wonderful night watching the Grammy's so far.
Chicagoland is expecting just a bit of snow tomorrow night and into Tuesday; two inches and possibly more S. of I-80. Warmed up today to almost 40 here.
The rest of the week looks smooooth, like that Beach Boys get-together performance, and Adele!! (wow she nailed it) tonight.
Big plans ahead at the end of the month and first days of March. It's time--time--Time for a Road Trip! Going to Oklahoma to see our daughter, and taking the scenic route.
No real route decisions have been made, but we're pretty sure we're gonna trip Route 66! From Chi to OKC (as best we can, within logic ;)
Please, add thoughts, memories, stops you recommend (largest ball of twine...lol, etc...).
For sure there will be photos, and whackiness traveling with hubby and I, 1807 miles (round trip). And, of course, there will be weather, and weather related stops, among other things.
We will be attending the National Severe Weather Workshop for 3 of the days in Norman, too. This is not only an interest of mine, but is something related to my husband's job, as well. Not required, but voluntary extra education.
Again, add any ideas for travel. We are planning to stay in the Ozarks, on the way down and ??? On the way back. Soooooo, put your drivin songs on, get a full tank of gas and grab the sunglasses! Let's get ready to roll!

For now...was at Ylee's webcams and saw this lil black cloud hanging out over Castleton Valley, UT
So. Sappy as I am, posted a still picture of the scene.
and, "Find a way to Shine" Keith Urban seemed to fit.

Just one thing to say - I am so glad there wasn't you-tube and personal videos when I was singing way back in the dark ages!!! lol
Actually, somewhere in the archives at the BBC, there is a "Songs of Praise" programme from 1971 that shows me singing in Ripon Cathedral along with about a hundred other choristers! The camera stayed on me for all of ten seconds! lol
We are losing power on and off here, so I'm up at 4 am!
Actually, I started taking pictures of the trees in the dark, full of very heavy wet snow. May go back to bed and get up in an hour or so to get more pictures of the trees at dawn.
Think I caught a green flash of the transformer in this picture:
And you should recognize out front by the little birdbath. These limbs are bending almost to the ground on the smaller trees:
There is a coating of ice, then wet heavy snow, then a coating of ice again.
I have a bunch of pictures. Working on some for WU photo section, and then a slide show for here. Coming soon.
If we get winds before this melts, this is going to be trouble.
Ok slideshow time - then I should get to work! Some of these were posted before, but here is the whole series of this storm. (stop the slides by hovering over the bottom right arrows if you wish)
I actually saw some snow this morning,it lasted about 30 minutes.Whew!!!Can't take these winter storms!!!
Anyway, some heavy showers later today, then the wind really sets in,Wind advisories up all over my area after midnight tonight.
TGIF!!!!
I was chatting with Sandi this morning and she told me you are from Chicago - so I had to stop by. Great to see familiar weather maps! I live in Michigan, not too far from Charles.
We shared the heavy, wet snow today. Lake effect is still falling here this evening - but it has calmed down a lot. Gotta love this winter in the midwest!
Have a great weekend whatever you do!
Glad you saw some of the pics I took.
Hi Jane across the Lake! We sort of have 'talked' before, but maybe you didn't recognize me from Sandi's. Welcome. Hope your snow treated you well. Did you have a snow day? Here, it was just a late start to the day. I don't have school age children though...ahhhhh didn't have to worry about that ;) Thanks for stopping by.
Ok so for those of you who know me...this is totally a joke.
But what does one wear to a weather conference seminar banquet?
Too Much!!!??? Who me??? over the top with fluff??? Who Me???
Well, this is much more like it! But, ya know? I just may need a sweater or something? Eh? Sheesh...This could be pushing it a tad--the lil black dress?? (it IS soo Norman)
Although, I think one can go just about anywhere in a tangerine raincoat!
Ahhh, ok I got it...this number with a tangerine raincoat! ;)
Now, if anyone thinks I'm even remotely serious, please, close all open tabs and step away from the puter. Thank you. But I am sort of trying to figure out what I will wear...just not quite so dramatic, lol.
This look may be memorable down there:
:)
So much thought needs to go into this here packing-- :{
The weather; the functions; the formalities...
Mostly the Fun! For that, just give me my blue jeans, and 'the good shoes' yahoooo!
Oh, night all ships...be safe. Going to bed here. I was up since about 4 am when the power was flickering.
AND it is time you were in bed young lady - you have been up since 4am! (or did you go back to bed after taking the snow shots?
LOL - I have just seen the edit in your previous shot .... you agree with me about bed!!!
Actually, the lady in the picture above deserves a blog about her and her husband! They were homesteaders in New Mexico during the years before WWII, and lived in a dugout house!
Sandi those are seriously funny and match peeerfectly! I want a pair!
Ylee, ha hahaha... See what you learn on a weather blog? lol
Beautiful day here in Chicagoland. We didn't expect it to make it to 30, but it is sunny and 34 degrees. Again, I cannot stress how lucky we were up here in Far Northern IL to not have had damaging winds while all that snow and ice was on the trees yesterday. Certainly, there was damage just from the weight of the trees, but not compounded by high wind. Maybe? Here in my little valley, it wasn't bad. 2 or 3 trees broke and that was it.
Hubby is going out there now to get another limb secured. It is hanging by a thread.

And, for the banquet
:)
Wet and snowy systems on and off all week for Chicago. We're getting out of here just in time.
And, Uhm...looks like we may be chasin Wednesday unintentionally--on our way to Oklahoma City.
Tues. should be ok because we're staying in Wine Country, MO. There may be storms, but we won't be driving too much in them. Wednesday may be a different story.
Will be watching this. BBL Have a wonderful Sunday all!
Wind Advisory for us right now:
.. Wind Advisory in effect from 10 am this morning to 5 PM CST
this afternoon...
The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a Wind
Advisory... which is in effect from 10 am this morning to 5 PM CST
this afternoon.
* Timing... winds will be on the increase this morning... reaching
advisory criteria by mid to late morning... and lasting until
late this afternoon.
* Winds... southeast winds early this morning will become south and
increase to 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 45 mph by late
morning... and decrease and become southwesterly by late
afternoon.
* Impacts... strong winds will cause lighter loose objects to be
blown about. These strong winds will also make driving a bit
tricky... especially when traveling on east-west oriented roads.
High profile vehicles such as full size vans... delivery trucks
and semi trailers... are most at risk... especially if empty of
lightly loaded.
I'm sure you know that kinda goes with the territory.
:)
I see you got your eye on Tues. Sounds like you may be at your overnight stop in time to avoid something that might come your way. Hope you and hubby remember that line...
And it won't be no thing if it starts to rain
And we have to wait it out in the truck
We might wind up a little deeper in love
So baby lets roll with it
~songwriter David Lee, "Roll With It"
I know you'll keep an eye out. Wonder if it'll be past you by the time you get on the road Wednesday.
I kinda like those boots myself. Life being what it is, boots come in handy once in a while.
:)
Safe journey!
Chicago crib (577 ft)(maritime) 230 PM Feb 26 47 mph
A few other 44 mph readings around N. IL, too.
Not as bad as out East and their sustained winds. Or what has gone on out West. However, after our heavy ice and snow, I was still concerned about the tree damage.
The limb in yesterday's photos came down! Saves us $200.00 for a crew tomorrow.
It fell perfectly! No damage to anything in the driveway or the boats.
So, today, we did more planning and a bit of shopping. I think we are ready ;)
Breaker 19...
(no, actually, these are weather radios/walkie talkie/2 ways, perty cool eh??? yup you know it!) Hubby and I are going to play hotel tag through the hallways ;)
The crews from Texas Storm Chasers are going to be in Norman - they've been tweeting, asking to know who else is going to be there. Here's their site, where you can pick up their twitter feed.
Glad to see the limbs down safely - and you've got your jerky. All good!
That's a pretty big limb. And some healthy snacks. lol
Cool beans. If I had a hubby to talk to, I'd like some of those walking, talking weather radios. What fun. And practical, too.
Actually stopped in to say I saw a lady in Walmart wearing a zebra-stripe engineer's cap with a blingy, pink fleur-de-lis on it kind of off-center from the front middle. The fleur-de-lis was off-center, not the lady or the hat. AND the hat had a couple pink feathers tucked into the blingy thingy! Only reason I didn't ask her where I could get a hat like that was I don't wear hats.
;)
But if you'd want a hat like that, you'll find lots of them in the gas station convenience stores on the northskirts of OKC. When you get to Norman, they might have blingy animal print hats but you're gonna run into (the problem of) everything being decorated with "OU." That's just the way it is south of OKC. lol
'Course I'm saying this tongue-in-cheek, but it's all true and I hope it helps you prepare for your stay in this culture called Oklahoma.
:)
(Hi,shore!)
I don't know if the storm chaser dudes want to know this lady from Chi is going to be there, but I'm glad you told me. I do follow the chasers, and if we happen to meet, that would be cool.
BF, I have dug out every animal print item I can find! If I get there and everyone is dressed in Country Club like golf wear, I'mma gonna be howlin at ya ;) j/k Who knows? I'll throw a bunch of 'whad I feel like' in the suitcase tomorrow.
My son asked me if I was going to catch catfish with my bare hands???
I posted some new pics of Molly today. A bit more artistic for the main, but w/e. Off to bed. Busy day wrapping up work tomorrow and then 'blast off'. Thanks for stopping. Trains are going to bed....
If I don't get called in again, enjoy your trip, and make sure you do something you can tell your grandkids, and maybe something you can't tell your grandkids, lol!
It appears Chicago will stay on the rainy side of it, however maybe some mixed precip? far Northern IL (by my area)
Looking like we'll be in MO by the time it really hits, and then Wednesday, we will just wait it out a bit? I need to look at this better for Wednesday.
8 minutes and counting until I leave the office and officially say it is VACATION! Whoooo hooooo! See you all later tonight maybe after I pack and relax a bit.
NEw Good Tune!
Hope the back holds up and keep snapping the photos.
Hi OZ, thank you for stopping by. You will certainly be close by if you are in Wisconsin! WU mail me or connect if you would like. But, certainly you will have plenty to do while in the States. Sounds like a great trip.
Good luck getting everything ready with your busy schedule and shows. And, good luck with the shows and feeding the whole crew. Can't imagine getting ready for a trip overseas!
I'm only going to Oklahoma and you'd think I was going 1/2 way around the world, lol.
Needless to say, I'm exhausted getting ready. But, it is house-cleaning, preparing all for the house-sitters, etc...
Be back later...or maybe I'll just start a new blog from the road and from the Severe Weather Workshop in Norman :)
We're outta here in the mornin! On the road again! Whoo hooo

...KS/OK/MO THIS EVENING...
MID LEVEL CAPPING IS LIKELY TO LIMIT CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT ACROSS
THE SOUTHERN PLAINS UNTIL AFTER DARK...WHEN THE SURFACE COLD FRONT
BEGINS TO SAG SOUTHEASTWARD INTO THE DEEPER MOISTURE PROFILES OVER
CENTRAL KS/OK. MULTIPLE MODEL SOLUTIONS SUGGEST THUNDERSTORMS WILL
FORM FIRST IN CENTRAL KS AND BUILD SOUTHWARD ALONG THE FRONT INTO
OK...THEN SPREAD EASTWARD INTO PARTS OF MO/AR DURING THE EVENING.
FAVORABLE WIND FIELDS AND STEEPENING LAPSE RATES WILL SUPPORT A RISK
OF SEVERE STORMS CAPABLE OF HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS. IF DISCRETE
STORMS CAN FORM AHEAD OF THE FRONT...LOW LEVEL HODOGRAPHS ALSO
SUPPORT A RISK OF TORNADIC SUPERCELLS.
...MID MS VALLEY OVERNIGHT...
THE INCREASING CONVECTION OVER OK/KS DURING THE EVENING IS EXPECTED
TO CONGEAL ACROSS SOUTHERN MO AND NORTHERN AR AFTER MIDNIGHT. WHILE
THERE IS CONSIDERABLE DIVERSITY BETWEEN MODEL SOLUTIONS REGARDING
HOW THIS CONVECTION EVOLVES...WIND FIELDS WILL BECOME VERY STRONG
OVERNIGHT AND FAVORABLE FOR DAMAGING WINDS AND TORNADOES. LOW LEVEL
MOISTURE WILL ALSO BE INCREASING ALONG THE MS RIVER VALLEY...
INCREASING THE RISK OF BUOYANT SURFACE-BASED PARCELS AS FAR NORTH AS
SOUTHEAST MO/SOUTHERN IL BY 12Z.
..HART/COHEN/MOSIER.. 02/28/2012
Perhaps you'll be stopped for the night by the time anything kicks up in Missouri - if it does. Down here, light rain in some areas overnight and early this morning. And dewpoints are a little higher than expected, I think.
Have fun and take care!
Did a rant worthy of you on my blog; our school system decided to hold the buses a half hour while the storms passed, but didn't bother to tell anyone else!
Glad you are having a great time!
Have a good trip. Have lots of fun. See you when you get back!
I trust you made it to Oklahoma in fine shape.
1800 1 NNW FOOSE DALLAS MO 3757 9315 *** 1 FATAL, 12 INJ *** THIS TORNADO MOVED FROM POLK INTO DALLAS COUNTY FROM 1 MILE NORTH NORTHWEST OF FOOSE TO 2 MILES EAST OF BUFFALO. (SGF)

1822 1 SE BENNETT SPRINGS LACLEDE MO 3772 9284 A BRIEF TORNADO TOUCHDOWN DAMAGED AROUND 20 RECREATIONAL VEHICLES AND AN ANTIQUE SHOP. (SGF)
Add 10 pm. LOL Now those tornado reports have disappeared. Hilarious. Data entry error. Data entry error. They didn't make sense anyway. So, if you experienced any wind today, was probably hot air outflow from this post. LMAO (at me)
Didn't track the storms last night, on a night when Illinois was most under the gun. We were on the road. Now, I am feeling soooo bad seeing the bad news.
I have tears in my eyes seeing Harrisburg, IL.
Today, we traveled on across MO. One tweet today was from the Joplin FD or EMS who said to Branson, 'we got your back'. Joplin went to help Branson, as did people from Branson who helped Joplin last year.
All I can say is: Harrisburg, all of Illinois is with you. Can't even imagine how many groups from IL and surrounding are headed your way, chin up and hang on, we'll be there for you!
For those in the way of severe already predicted for Friday, please get a noaa radio immediately. (think I'm preachin to the choir ;) But I'll blast that on FB, Twitter, and anywhere else that'll have me. Noaa radios save lives.
May be posting from this conference here in Norman as it happens. May start a new blog. Please be safe all, goodnight.
Wishing you "white rabbits, white rabbits, white rabbits and a very happy month of March".... and happy road trip!! lol
Triple Bleached Bunnies to you, jus! Coworker had a pic on his phone of the Newburgh, In. tornado. A lot of people were blessed that no one was hurt seriously!
Did you sing the tune Oklahoma when you crossed the state line? :)
Have fun!
Ok, Southern IL...you need to be totally prepared tomorrow :{ TOTALLY PREPARED! REALLY!
Tonight was the banquet and just a phenomenal talk from Mr. Keith Stammer, Jasper County Emergency Management, Joplin, Missouri. Stirring, educational--just no words to describe it. Phenomenal. Met some very interesting people. SPC directors (by chance). It has been pretty interesting.
I shut the blog down early today and basically through the trip because I just didn't want it open while I couldn't devote time to it, or really comment on the severe weather happening in my home state of IL and all over.
Let me say, being in Norman at the Severe Weather Workshop, during a severe weather outbreak (PDS, and what transpired today) was pretty incredible in itself. Hard to explain. We were basically looking back at last year in much detail (and other subjects) while watching something evolve today (yesterday) which, in itself, was pretty epic--again!
My thoughts: Everything has changed since last year's storms. Everything has changed since Katrina. Everything has changed in social media and the way we communicate. Everything has changed in the weather.
And, everything is evolving so quickly.
Anyway, so sorry for all those affected yet again by these storms today. The death toll, the towns in shock.
My friend's daughter and grandchildren were ok in Lebanon, TN today, whew.
Better blog to come when I get a bit more time. (We had so much fun and learned sooooo much as well ;)
