How Come?
Posted by: palmettobug53, 22:53 GMT le 15 juillet 2012 +2
This is just a random musings entry. I've been doing a lot of wondering lately about "How come....?"

How come just about all the body lotions on the market today come with pump dispensers rather than the bottle you pick up, flip the top open and squeeze out the amount you need? Those pump dispensers quit dispensing when there's still a good inch or more lotion in the bottle. The other kind, you can set them upside down so that the lotion all runs to the cap end and you can get pretty much every darn bit of it out.

Lotions, at least the ones I like, have gotten way too expensive, IMHO, to toss the remains when the pump quits pumping. Maybe I'm just lazy but I hate having to take the pump out and slam the bottle in my palm. I don't have time to fiddle about with that in the mornings when I'm getting ready for work!

My solution? I've discovered that most tops to those containers are the same size, pump or not. Go to the dollar store and buy a bottle of less expensive lotion with the flip cap, switch tops with your other bottle of lotion. Then, never throw that cap out unless it falls apart or something.

Another thing I wonder is how come the bank and grocer stores have umpteem windows or check out lanes but only a fraction of them are manned? Esp Walmart. They must have close to 30 registers and maybe 10 are open. Even on peak shopping days and times. Like Saturdays.

Got no solution to that one, though.

How come unexpected visitors always drop by when your house is a complete mess, instead of right after you finish cleaning and straightening up?

How come all the good classic movies come on the middle of the night during the work week? Or even during the day during the workweek? Oodles of good movies. Then, you take some vacation time. Are there any good movies on then, when you're home and free to watch? Noooooooooooo.

That's just a few that I've been wondering about. I'm sure there are dozens more.

Anyone want to chime in with their favourite "How come....."

How come your hair always looks its best when you have to get it cut the next day?

Happy almost over Sunday.

LOL... you must have better hair than I do, OGal. When mine was short and needed cutting, I looked awful. No amount of brushing would do the trick. It could look really raggy.

Now that I'm letting it grow out, it looks rumpled in the mornings when I get up but it will brush out and look halfway decent.

I had a busy day today. Lots of household chores and cooking dinner. This is about the first time I've had a few minutes to sit down, other than reading the paper early this morning.

I'm watching Andy reruns and waiting on 'Queen and Country' to come on at 8:00 on PBS. Managed to get a new entry up. I wasn't really very inspired but it was the best I could come up with, at the moment.

How come one ages faster after age 65?

There must be a better how come question than the one I wrote. I'll have to give this some thought.

What a fun idea for a blog.

I just had this conversation with my mom! I generally buy the same lotion (at Costco), so I just plop the almost used up bottle lid down on top of the newer one (after I use a little bit up) and let it drain into the bottle. My mom said that she noticed that Jergens still have a screw top lid, but that was about the only one she could find. But I (and she) agree with you!

How come they don't teach us in school how to make really awesome lotion for pennies in like 15 mins???

*1/4 cup oil olive, safflower, coconut, almond, hemp~ what ever kind you like..feel free to infuse with your favorite herbs.
*1 1/4 cups distilled water
*1/4 cup emulsifying wax
(*1/4 tsp Vit E, citric acid, collagen & such & up to 20 drops of favorite essential oils are all optional)
~melt wax & oil
~boil water
~mix all & pour in containers while hot
~cap & shake container every 15 mins or so while it's cooling.

Use sesame seed (natural SPF ~10) & coconut oil (makes it stick in water better) & add a teaspoon of titanium dioxide & a tsp of zinc oxide to make an awesome sunscreen..

LOL - Loved reading the entries.

How come I intended to sit at the computer for half an hour and then suddenly realise I have been here for nearly three times that!

How come I diet and still put on weight!

How come Mondays seem to come around much quicker as you get older!

Happy Monday to you. Driving north to meet my friend who drives south, today :)

Beth, ditto for vacation time. Man, that flies by.

Pros, that is kinda another 'how come' I have. Remember when we were kids and Christmas o(r your birthday) took an eon to get here? Now, it seems like you just finish packing up the tree and decorations and ~~~BOOM~~~ you've got 15 shopping days left!

Karen, that is too funny. The three of us on opposite sides of the country having the same thoughts at the same time!

Skye, where in the world do you get those ingredients, a health food or supply store? I know what I'd make: rosemary lotion! Or rose. Or honeysuckle. Jasmine or gardenia.

Sandi, hope you enjoy your visit. I have noticed that: the more I try to diet, the faster I gain weight.

Had a lovely get together with my friend and caught up the gossip. The lunch was only so-so, I think they have a new chef!! lol

Watching a John Wayne, B&W movie called "The Fighting Seabees". It's one I don't think I have seen, or maybe saw such a long time ago I have forgotten it!

Hi, Sandi. Glad you enjoyed the visit but sorry that lunch wasn't up to snuff.

I've seen 'The Fighting Seabees' several times but it's been a while. Isn't that one of the few movies his character died in? The Duke didn't die in many. There was True Grit and The Shootist.

Janet, I saw that in the paper this morning. Rather shocked me, as I hadn't heard anything about her in years.

I had a little passenger yesterday on my way to The Vegetable Bin after work. I got halfway there and realized that the bit of twig on my windshield wiper was a baby mantis. He/she managed to hang on 'til I got parked. I snagged it in my juice container, bunged the container back in my lunch bag and released the little fella in my flower bed after I got home.

I did get some fresh local tomatoes, cukes, bell peppers, peaches and some leaf lettuce.

How come you forget your bar of bath soap is down to a sliver until you're in the shower and wet from head to foot?

Happy Wednesday!

hello to Shore, Patti, Ylee and Sandi.

How come half the drivers on the road seem to have no idea that their vehicles come equipped with a handy little device called directionals (aka turn signals)?

Back to the seven kittens. They are in fine form at the moment! LOL

Bug I have been watching the kittens on and off all morning. Mom tried to tinkle in the liter box and four of the kittens were playing with her tail. They sure are just the cutest of the cute. I love how they fall over each other and end up in a ball fighting and playing. Yesterday there were two asleep in the liter boxes. Mom lays down and four or five are nursing and she gets up and moves.

Hope you are having a good day. We are in for more showers and then tomorrow hot, hot, hot and dry.

Hi, Ogal.

Just checked the link but the cam is off the air for the moment.

Oh, I am happy, happy, happy!

I decided to run on down to Target in Citadel Mall before going home. It's not that far from the house; much closer than Walmart.

I thought I'd look at mice. I'm getting used to this keyboard, though there's a lot of keys with little symbols on them that I need to pull out my manual and see what they're for. There are some that I suspect substitute for the number keypad but I don't know yet what to hold down to get them to work.

Anyhoo, I now have a little Logitech cordless mouse in a sporty red and black!

Oh, it is SOOOOOOOO much better and faster than that blinkety-blink-blink touch pad. I gave it a go; I fiddled with it for a good two months and I just flat out DON'T like it.

I'll continue working with the lappy and I may even wind up getting another one, down the road. However, though you can teach an old dog new tricks, sometimes, you have to hang on to something tried and true - like the mouse.

Not much time left on my battery. I was pottering about some last night and I only had about a half hour or 45 minutes left, when I shut down.

I read this last month, or the month before, in Readers Digest. Then, last week, someone emailed it to me.

I got a good chuckle out of it and I hope you will, too.

BEEN THERE

I have been in many places, but I've neverbeen in Cahoots. Apparently, you can't go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone.

I've also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there.

I have, however, been in Sane. They don't have an airport; you have to bedriven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my friends, family and work.

I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I'm not too much on physical activity anymore.

I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit there too often.

I've been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm.

Sometimes I'm in Capable, and I go there more often as I'm getting older.

One of my favorite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get!

I may have been in Continent, and I don't remember what country I was in. It's an age thing.

I think I have been to all of them!

So glad you went with the Logitec wireless mouse - I have the one in red and black, too!

Hope Thursday is going OK - and your work load is not too "high"!

OH, it's Thursday! The weekend is almost here.

Hi, Sandi. The workload is, perhaps, a bit better but I'm still contemplating a visit to Sane because of it!

Wasn't that a hoot?

Still no rain, despite the constant tease of dark clouds. i think someone is getting it but it hasn't been us at home. Or even downtown at work.

I looked all through that manual for my laptop and there's no 'roadmap' of the keyboard, explaining what those symbols are for and how to use them. I'll have to get online and look. I ran out of battery time last night and just didn't get back on line; I was watching TV and working crosswords. That laptop stand come in handy for crosswords, too. A multi-use table!

We got a good inch of rain at the house this afternoon. It figures that it would hit right about time for my afternoon commute. Came down pretty hard, too, but I got home OK. Kicked my shoes off in the truck, cracked the door, popped the bumbershoot out and open and tip toed to the door.

The sun's been peeping out but there's a good possibility of more pop up showers/storms through the evening.

My lunch break will be very brief tomorrow, as I am coming in late. I have an appt with my primary care phsycician to see how I'm doing after 3 months on my statin.

I miss my grapefruit!

Hey Bug! So you are on statins too? I've been on them for quite a while. Apparently high cholesterol runs in the family. They gave me a year to bring my levels down on my own, and while I did, not low enough for them. Now my total levels are just OK, but my breakdown is very, very good. That's what really counts!

I was thinking about you and laptop lap pads the other day. We were in Bed, Bath and Beyond, and they had quite a selection. If you have one in town, take a look. They have everything out for college now and there are plenty to choose from. It sounds like you got some sort of a tray that might be working for you in the meantime!

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

Have you read Little Bee? I read it for a book club and it was quite fascinating.

It's been out for awhile so I was able to get it at the library. I finished it in just a few days!

Hi, Karen!

I'll have to check that book out.

I found a laptop cart when the renters across the street skipped out, leaving a mess of stuff in the carport. Mostly trash and a few boxes of junk. I waited 4 weeks, then snagged the thing. Folds up when not in use and I can roll it to the side, out of the way. It has one loose screw and I'm fixing that this weekend. It was filthy dirty but a little cleaner and elbow grease took care of that.

It works great and not just for my laptop; it comes in handy for working crosswords, too!

gotta go; I'm on abbreviated lunch today.

Even with lotion squeeze bottles, the last bit never comes out. So I grab a serrated knife and cut the bottom 2 inches off the not-quite-empty lotion bottle and dip the remaining lotion out with my fingers. I do the same thing with mustard squeeze bottles, too. Good to the last drop!

How come time slows down when you're not feeling good and flies by when you're having fun?

How come when I feel like someone is going to drive me crazy, I'm reassured by this thought is "At least it's a short drive"?

How come the younger generation is so proud of how well they can multitask when it's been proven time and again that multitasking causes people be less efficient and less creative, and even to make lots of mistakes? Be a single-tasker and proud of it!

How come the Lost and Found only contains things that have been found?

Good morning!

Kinda iffy day here, weatherwise. Really overcast and looks like rain but whether we get any or not, will likely depend on if I put laundry on the line to dry.

Briar, I can multitask to a limited extent, which is probably all to the good. I get too much going on and I can't focus.

I see you've also noticed that it's a short drive to Crazy! lol

Ylee, it never fails, does it? When you're in a hurry, everyone slows down and turns into Lookie Lous.

OMIGOSH, Shore! That's too funny! You notice it looks like she had nodded off in the crosswalk? Good on her, though, for whacking his fancy auto with her bag! LOL

Note to Dad, if you're reading this: If you click on the arrow in the video, it will start playing for you.

Not much on the agenda today. The usual household chores.

My doctor sent in my new scrips to Walmart, so I must go down there and pick them up. Maybe pick up a few groceries. I do need to put some money on my gift card and get gas while I'm down there.

I see gas prices are leaping upwards again. A month or 6 weeks ago, they had dipped just below 3.00 a gallon. In the past week, they've gone up to 3.10, 3.12. I saw one station Thursday (on the way in to work after my doctor's appt) that was 3.17.

All the more reason to get your gas at the Murphy's station at the Walmart Supercenters using Walmart cards. Or at Costco. I believe their prices are comparable to Murphy's for Costco members.

No visit to my cousin today. Her daughter was supposed to be coming to take her out to run some errands.

How come, when you go to the store and pull out your coupons for the things on your list that you want or need, they expired yesterday? Or last week?

I feel like I'm wasting my time, coupon clipping. I might use one or two a week. If that. It seems like all the ones I have are expired or for things I don't need yet.

If I had a decent sized pantry or storage area, I could possibly stock up on some items before I need them.

Which is the main reason I don't make Hubby take me down to Costco. He has a card from work but so much of their stuff is in bulk and I have no place to put it.

Sigh.....

Hey Bug - you know I used to be a big coupon clipper, but I have noticed that within the last year or so, they just aren't good anymore. Stores used to put stuff on sale that I would use, and then I'd use the coupon too and boy was my grocery store bill low! Not so much anymore.

I do some shopping at Costco - mostly for vitamins, TP, Kleenix, dog/cat food, some bread, gum, hamburger, things like that. I get some other things too - peanut butter, butter, eggs, and once in a while, some clothing. I've bought a few cameras at Costco and our last tent came from there too. The have an online shopping site that is exclusively online.

Then I do an awful lot of other shopping at Trader Joe's. They have good stuff and it's not expensive.

I finished Little Bee, and I also read another book. I'm trying to read all the books that are nominated for the California Young Reader Medal books. The teachers at my school read the books in the appropriate category, and then vote for the book. I mail in the ballots and then we wait to see who won at the state level. I've already read the picture books, so now I'm on the chapter books. The first one I read, Eleven, was just so-so. I just finished Where the Mountain Meets the Moon and I liked that one. Still have one more to go.

I'm reading another Jodi Picoult book next. Starting that one tonight since I just finished a book today!

Hope life is treating you well!

Whoa.... late check in today.

I hit the bed fairly early last night but didn't wake up this morning until almost 9:00!

Been reading the paper and getting the bed linens washed and on the line. Pottering about the house.

Karen, I agree with you about the coupons. It's beginning to be not worth the trouble. They either expire within a couple of weeks (before you need the item) or so or they're only good if you buy 2, 3, 4 or more to get the cents off. I simply do not have the storage space nor would I use them up fast enough.

Pros, you always amaze me with your pictures. Lovely butterflies! I was watching a couple of them yesterday, flitting around the neighbor's bottlebrush (?) plant.

I had been sitting outside, trying to spot hummingbirds. I KNOW I saw one zip past Monday after I got home from work. I went inside and fixed up my sugar water and put the feeder out. Haven't seen one since. I pulled it down yesterday afternoon, rinsed it out and refilled it with fresh sugar water.

I'm still waiting.

Happy Monday. Yippee.

How come when you're in a hurry to get someplace, you hit every single red light there is? Or the bridge is up? (Not that that one happens often; they don't raise the bridges during rush hour) Or there's someone stalled out or a fender bender holding up traffic?

Busy, busy day here.

Higher temps in the offing, so I'll need to water this afternoon. We got a brief, very brief, sprinkle yesterday afternoon. Just enough to make the humidity worse and nothing else.

Monday lunch - only 4 and a half days left! lol

And yes, I will do the decking myself - I built it in the first place! I reckon I need some new, treated 6"x2"x6 foot planks, which I will screw into the damaged supporting beams, saving me taking the whole decking up! I do have a trusty neighbour who can be roped in when they need fitting! lol

Ok the reverse of every light being red is what happens to me. I allow a certain amount of time and I hit every light green and I am fifteen minutes early and I have to sit and wait. But if I don't plan my time I end up hitting every light red and I am late. This usually happens when I go to get a haircut.

Bug, have you checked out the kittens new digs? I am not sure exactly what this means. Maybe they have been moved into a larger room. Take a look.

Excuse the copy and paste from my blog:

Bug - I checked my Lithops the other day and they have died. I don't know if I told you, but I had my pot inside another pot that didn't drain(bad, bad, BAD!). I think it was winter before last when we had a pretty wet winter, and they sat in water far too long. I never really watered that plant, it only got what the rain provided or marine layer moisture. Anyway, I discovered it too late. I had two little pods for a little while, but they didn't look good. I still have the pot in the backyard, hoping against all odds that something might spout up! I had babies too - isn't it weird how they multiply?????

I not only helped with the beach clean up, I am now on the executive board. She asked me last December, so I've been on it for about six months now. Only have to attend a few meetings a year and try to do at least a couple of clean ups. We must be having another meeting soon as there is a 'walk' in September and we need to plan for that!

Here's my "How come? for the day, brought to mind by a recent experience. Very recent.

How come companies like AT&T hire idiots to be service representatives? (Or, to be entirely fair, how come companies like AT&T make their representatives hew to such stupid company lines?) Here's the story.

Three months ago I decided to dump my house phone. I called ATT and asked for them to disconnect my service. They did. A couple of weeks later, I got a final bill, showing a credit of $6.61. They said, “Don’t pay this. We’ll send a refund check.” In a couple more weeks the check arrived and I cashed it.

The next month, I got a statement saying I had a credit of $6.61. The next month, I got the same statement. This month, I decided enough is enough and called them.

I explained the situation. I provided everything from my mother’s maiden name to my recipe for ratatoille. The nice customer service person agreed that (1) my service had been disconnected, and (2) I had a credit of $6.61. No, I said. There should be no credit. I’ve received it and cashed the check.

We went around and around and finally she laid down the law. The only way for me to close out my account that already has been closed was to allow them to send me the refund I was due of $6.61. So I said ok – send it along.

I did think about not cashing the second check, just to mess up their accounting. Then I remembered: their accounting already is messed up!

Who knows? If I work this right I may have a lifetime income of $6.61 per month from ATT.

I'm in it up to my eyeballs.... Where does all this work come from? Thank heavens for lunch breaks!

Sandi, you be sure to rope in that neighbor and not try to lift and heave by yourself!

Oh, dear, Ylee... I'm one of those salaried folks!

Ogal, I'll have to check out the webcam. I don't think I've looked at it since, maybe, Friday night?

Bad Karen! You drowned your lithops! We'll just have to report you to the SPCP - the society for prevention of cruelty to plants! LOL

eh, it happens.

Well, Shore, that situation sure qualifies for some kind of stupidity award but which one, I don't know. I don't think it quite fits in with The Darwins, The Stellas or the Ig Nobles. Are there any others out there? Maybe we need to come up with one.

I guaran-damn-tee you that, though, if you kept your mouth shut, cashed in those monthly 6.61 cent checks, at some point down the road, someone at AT&T would catch it and you'd wind up having to pay it all back.

Here is a "How Come" for you ...
How come I did not water any of my pots for almost three months and they grew beautifully, but give them three days of sunshine and they turn up their leaves and wilt! I have been outside for over half an hour, now the sun has gone down, watering all the pots! Each year I say \i won't have so many, and each year I do the same amount - or more!

PS - there is something I have posted in #37 of my blog, which might give you a giggle!

Eeeek! Big storm front headed our way. Winds 40-50 mph gusts, cloud to ground lightning, possible hail.

I see lots of lightning up in the clouds off to my north. Hope it blows out before it gets here but it's a big front and lots of red/orange.

Double Eeek is right!

The parting of the Red Sea/Red Storm Front was probably a fluke, though.

Looks like it's just going to roll right on through. Batten down the hatches, girl! (You're probably battened already, computer-wise.)

Gosh, I would love to have a nice, civilized thunder and lightning storm. I'll have to make do with yours!

Looks like it'll hit us around 10:15 or 10:30. Hope it doesn't flip the power.

The season finale of Deadliest Catch is almost over and the After The Catch special is due to come on right after. They don't ever rerun the After specials, so If the TV flips off, I'm doomed! :-(

Awww... we get to see Jake Anderson get married! By Sig Hansen, no less! LOL

Wind's picking up pretty good out there. No rain yet.
The whole horizon to my north is lit up with lightning; completely from one side to the other, when it flashes.

Starting to get split-splats of rain on the kitchen window. It faces north, so when they blow in from that direction, it's the first place I look. And I can see it from my chair in the living room.

Long before now, Daisy would have scuttled off, belly to the ground, to hide out the storm.

Gus is snoozing on the footstool, without a care in the world. He's not even batting an eylash. I guess he's happy as a pig in clover, being inside and out of it. Not like last summer! I'll bet he got soaked quite a number of times, as well as trying to find a place to get out of the rain.

Only have a few minutes of battery power left, so will watch the radar for a few more minutes, then shut down.
