Heavy Rain Friday Night

Monday, 11:30PM, September 6th, 2010

After Friday and Saturdays gale and lake effect rain, Sunday and Monday turned out to be cool, but nice days. It got down to 33F here Sunday Morning. I went to Presque Isle on Friday evening. The waves were pretty big, around 10-18 feet or so. The winds were gusting to about 60mph on the west side of Presque Isle near the lodge. A 71mph wind gust was recorded in Lake Superior. The road around the Isle was closed due to fallen trees. Many trees fell. In fact, a camp ground had to be evacuated near Munising due to the strong wind and falling trees. Waves were also splashing over the rock wall along Lakeshore Boulevard. I will have more on the storm later.

A 998mb low currently over central Minnesota will move northeast towards Lake Superior tonight. A warm front and associated low level jet and FGEN will bring in heavy rain tonight to the U.P. Along with the showers, a broken line of storms should move across the U.P tonight, a few of which my produce gusty winds. Dry sloting will end the precipitation by 8AM in the eastern and southern U.P. Lake enhancement and a pocket of stronger Q-Vector convergence in the wrap around of the low should keep precip going across the west and northcentral U.P Tuesday into Tuesday night. Total rainfall should be around a quarter to a half an inch east of a line from roughly Marquette to Iron Mountain, with a half to one inch of rain with localy higher amounts possible to the west of the line. Gale conditions will also occur, with 45kt wind gusts possible on Lake Superior Tuesday Night with 14ft waves.

Stay tuned for updates! Good day and good night.
