Tropical Storm Hanna passed over northern Rhode Island around 215am on Saturday, September 7th, 2008. There was very little impact on Newport County. The winds didn't start picking up until 9pm Friday the 6th. They were averaging 11 mph out of the SE till midnight then died down till around 330am on the 7th when the winds switched around to the NW averaging 12 mph. The highest gust of the storm occured during this time (415 am) @ 38 mph from the WNW.
The total rainfall from the tropical storm was only 1.13 (.70 inches fell during the early morning hours of the 7th). The amount of rain was much lower compared to other parts of the State, which received up to four inches of rain.
Two local record were broken as a result from Hanna. 1st was most rain in one day (6th), the total was 1.37 breaking the old record of 1.32 that was set in 1979. The second record broken was lowest minimun barometic pressure, 29.39 (415am on 7th). This broke the old record of 29.44 that was set back in 1990 and 1979.
