Weather Summary

Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, July 04, 2008.

The wet conditions across Western Europe will continue on Friday due to a weakening trough across the western portion of the continent. Moderate and localized heavy rain will persist across the northern part of the British Isles, Germany, Denmark, and into Central Europe throughout the day on Friday. However, the rain should begin to lighten Friday night and going into Saturday. Meanwhile, a new system centered off of the southwestern coast of Ireland will produce cloudy and windy conditions, as well as moderate rain for the British Isles. The northern parts of both Portugal and Spain, along with western France can all expect to see some rain from this system as well on Friday. The Mediterranean countries will see some clouds and a few showers throughout the day, but should see dryer conditions as the day ends due to higher pressure moving into the region.

The Scandinavian Peninsula will continue to see mostly dry conditions due to a ridge, with the exception of a few clouds and showers, mostly in Finland. Meanwhile, the rest of Central Europe will see moderate to heavy rainfall throughout the day on Friday due to the weakening trough to the west. However, this rain should taper off going into Saturday.

An area of low pressure centered over western Russia will trigger widespread light to moderate rainfall across most of Eastern Europe.

Conditions over Europe will remain cool on Friday, with temperatures only reaching the low teens to the low 20s across most of the continent, although a few areas in the southern part of continent will see low 30s.

Bertha slowly intensifies, continues west-northwest

Dr. Jeff Masters

Tropical Storm Bertha has slowly intensified overnight, with new heavy thunderstorm activity building up around the center. Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) are now slightly below the threshold of 26°C considered beneficial for tropical storms, and this is limiting Bertha's intensification. This morning's 4:01am EDT QuikSCAT pass revealed top winds of about 30 mph, but the satellite was not able to reliably detect Bertha's strongest winds, since QuikSCAT does poorly ...

Weather History:

Did you know that...

On the first Independence Day (July 4, 1776), Thomas Jefferson bought his very first thermometer before signing the Declaration of Independence. Apparently, it was 76 degrees and cloudy. Also, on this date in 1956, a world record was set when Unionville, Maryland received 1.23 inches of rain...in one minute.
