Found this black swallowtail caterpillar and another one in my carrot patch yesterday, brought them into the house to keep them safe from birds. I find these every year in late summer or fall, and have posted photos of the crysalises and butterflies that result.

UPDATE: Congratulations on your AC.
Mum's parsley(?) growing in pots on the patio had about a dozen caterpillars almost *exactly* like this in 'em, scattered around, buried deep in the plants almost on top of the soil, and I thought her parsley was done-for. Coupla days later, not a single one was to be found. (I didn't touch 'em.)
I *hope* birds didn't get 'em, as they don't come that close to the house. Eeeeevil Squirrels, yeah, but not birds.
Way to go!
(Why it took so long is beyond me...and probably others, too, though!)
