A distant sound from the iceberg-laden waters of the lake formed at the base of the Mendenhall Glacier draws the momentary attention of this little two-year old black bear. He's been stuffing himself on migrating sockeye salmon in preparation for his long winter sleep.

Some wise trail builder has built raised boardwalks through the wetlands over sockeye migrating streams. This enables visitors to view bears in their natural habitat without disturbing them. The bears have so much fish that they are just plain busy there. I felt privileged to see this little guy. He sure was fat and beautiful. Judy

About Judy
Judy My spouse and I have found a happy home in Southeast Alaska. We flourish in this temperate rainforest on one of the many, small, rocky islands in the Alexander Archipelago. We receive an average annual rainfall of 13 feet which keeps us green and provides for our needs, but you can imagine how much we celebrate our occasional sunny days. Since we are protected, by nearby islands, from the open ocean, our channel waters are often calm and glassy, although fast moving storms can instantly whip them into a dangerous frenzy. Our community is surrounded by plenty of wild backcountry, so for us, it's the best of both worlds. Come take a walk on the cool side! We hope you enjoy the visit.
