Manual weather station, belongs to NOAA. I 'rescued' these from the LORAN (long range navigation) station (operated by the US Coast Guard) that was recently dismantled. It includes the temperature sensors inside the little white box on legs, and an 8 inch rain collector. These instruments date back to before the days of digital instruments and have to be set and read by a HUMAN. :)

Thank you Carl!

I just got word from my supervisor with the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, I get to keep these 'vintage' weather station instruments. When he comes out on his regular autumn rounds (to his volunteers in the field, like me) he will help me install them permanently and show me how to use them!

It will be fun to compare the readings of this with my automated station and NWS digital thermometer.

KT, it should be a blast to use these. We were not so in the dark with this type (my opinion). You don't dread winter do you? Only that days are shorter for you but you don't let temps get to you do you?

Oh no Carl, I really don't mind.

In fact, I do like the isolation that it brings, the peace. It's a real contrast to summers. (both weather-wise and culturally) Traffic becomes so sparse, the air is so very quiet. Work grinds to a halt. The weather is a challenge to be met with vigor! I like the connection with Nature that you get when you have to get out in it when it is at it's 'worst.'

I like to think there is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing! Or inappropriate preparation!

Or ... there is no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of weather! :) My Jack doesn't always agree...

This is exciting. Brings back happy memories from when my daughter was young and wanted to be a weather girl. We purchased various "kits" and listened to her predictions for about a year. Then she went on to being a teacher. :)

Love your description of weather vs. being prepared, Katy--very true!! And it sure would be terribly boring to have the same weather all year round wouldn't it? I love our seasons, and agree with you about winter making everything clean and white---it's lovely. Plus the summer tourists aren't here....just the winter snowmobilers instead. :P

Thanks for stopping by Dave and Kathy!

Kathy our population is so sparse, we will hear a bush plane more often than a snowmobile. Winter here truly 'sorts out' the population.

About katy99780
katy99780 I've lived in Alaska since 1969. I really love this wild land. The extremes of the far north shape and affect every living thing. Extremes of weather, elevation, daylight hours, isolation, flora and fauna, nothing in Nature is insignificant.I have a Davis Vantage Pro weather station, uploading to Wunderground, (Turks on the Tundra) the National Weather Service, the Citizen Weather Observation Program and MADIS (Meteorological Assimilation Data Ingest System).
