This agave plant is blooming, the final stage of it's life. The process of blooming requires incredible growth and completely depletes the core of the plant and it dies. Agaves can live several decades before blooming, hence the coloquial name of "century plant".

I saw several of these bloom in Bee and Live Oak Counties this year. I did not realize that they would not make it after blooming. Action: Quote \| Ignore User

My sister had one in their backyard in Mesa, AZ, that looked like the leaning tower of Pisa when the bloom stalk was up. It now has all kinds of babies around the base so all is not lost. :-) This is a beautiful shot, against the white adobe--love it!
