Yes, it was that dark. Tripod. Long exposures. I thought they were neat pictures, but the people did not rate them so well.

I think it is a beautiful picture. The sky is creepy, which is cool. I still can't tell if that was a storm or a night shot. It may help to set the exposure even longer or brighten it up a little in an image editing program. I did something like that with my night time shot of the MN fair. I selectively brightened the sky but kept the foreground lighting as it was.

As far as the low ratings, I don't understand. I had taken photos of a wave cloud before and no one cared for it either. I don't know why other people don't seem to care for those clouds. I find them impressive though. Anyways I added this to my favorites.

It was at night. I am not so good with cameras anymore; they became electronic and automatic. So I did a bunch of exposures over exposing and under exposing 1, 2, and maybe more f stops. One problem is that off to the south and east, at the bright spot in the picture, is Denver. If I exposed too much, then it became a white bright blob. What is cool - there are a few pictures were I did not move the camera and you can see the wave propagate.

I'm probably too whiny about the ratings! Most of my favorite pictures rate lower than my vanity expects.
