Canada Geese -- Moving down the Sni Bora (a channel in the St Clair Flats, Lake St Clair, Michigan) Shot at 1/2 mile with Canon EOS A2E/70-200 f2.8 @ f2.8 on Kodak Royal 400 under a full overcast; commercially printed at 4x6; scanned at 100dpi; rotated 1 degree left, cropped, reduced to 16 color gray scale, posterized and resized in PaintShop Pro v3.0.

This has the wrong date on it. I uploaded it in 2009, but it was taken in the fall back in the early 1990s. Pre digital. Scanning from a print was the only way to digitize a picture (for most of us). It was a gray day, so I just removed the final traces of color. I needed the picture for my early attempts at making a web page, so I scanned at very low resolution to keep the size down (people were viewing web pages with 1200 baud modems back then). I really liked the effect at the time. If I can find the print, or even the negative, I may try to make a modern version of this one. If I do, I will post it here.

This picture would be impossible today. Phragmites (an invasive species) have taken over many of the reed beds in the Flats. Today this view would be obscured by 8-10 foot tall, dense beds of Phragmites.
