I've lived in Alaska since 1969. I really love this wild land. The extremes of the far north shape and affect every living thing. I just realized you've got snow falling in the background...ouch!
Goodsign, I don't think there are bugs in the house, we are just getting away from 50 below winter, and these birds have a habit of hammering hollow-sounding things to mark territory, show their prowess to the other males, and attract females.
Trudy a squirrel did that damage to the opening a few years ago, when he robbed the house of baby swallows. :(
We used to have one of these birds that liked to land on top of our metal wood stove chimney and pound on that. He also liked to pound on a nearby ( empty) 55 gallon drum.
Not too many of this type bird in S.E. Alaska.
