Beach Hazard Statement
Issued: 04:07 EST Feb. 26, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Beach hazards statement in effect from 7 am EST this morning
through this evening...

The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a beach
hazards statement for strong long shore currents, developing rough
surf and a moderate risk of rip currents, which is in effect from
7 am EST this morning through this evening.

* Hazards... a strong north to south flowing longshore current will
pose a hazard to those entering the surf today. A lingering
ocean swell will also contribute to a moderate risk for rip
currents. Rough surf will develop at the beaches by afternoon.
Remember to always swim within sight of a lifeguard.

* Timing... through 7 PM.

* Location... east central Florida beaches.

* Potential impacts... a strong north to south flowing long shore
current can knock you off a sandbar and into deeper waters
making you more susceptible to rip currents. Rough surf will
also develop by afternoon causing a hazard to those entering the
surf. Strong rip currents are also possible near pier and
jetties.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Longshore currents commonly occur when waves approach the
shoreline at an angle. They can be particularly dangerous near a
jetty or pier.

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current remain calm.
Don't fight the current. Swim in a direction following the
shoreline. If unable to escape... face the shore and call or wave
for help. If tired, float or tread water until out of the rip
current.
